Re: My first SFG
You've got a very nice garden. I hope you continue to post pictures now and then.
Thanks for the tip about Mason's line. I'll have to try it. Right now I use venetian blind slats but have to hold them in place with stones.
I think using eye screws would help even if I use twine. Now why didn't I think of that. I have yards and yards of twine.
Thanks for the tip.

Re: My first SFG
beautiful garden.
I did the nice wood grid last year and some are not holding up well. I like the idea of the cheap mason line and screw eyes so that's what I will do when I build new boxes.
Your garden is amazing.
I didn't build a trellis last year just used a tomato tower that can be unfolded to be about 5' long.

Thanks Aspie, yeah I figure the wood lath will deteriorate at some point but it was cheap and it easily is removed. I used the mason's line for the 10' bed because i couldn't find any 10' lath. The screws get in the way if you want to put a cage over it. I think when my lath breaks down, I'll just replace it. Will see.

Great looking set up Maya. Congratulations. I'm also using mason line on my newest raised bed. The others have wood grids. If/when it breaks I'll just string mason line and replace each year as needed.

I agree, if you are a raw vegan then not growing your own food would almost be wasteful. Trying to eat well - healthy that is - can be very expensive. It is actually cheaper to eat crap. Hence, my goal of a year round garden. I am really looking forward to the challenge.
Re: My first SFG
Hi Maya,
Great setup!
I'm interested in your conduit 'cage' and would love a bit more info. How did you attach the top bar to the individual bent pieces? I'm a fan of PVC but that isn't going to work for my particular project. Conduit is much bendier, great idea!

Chopper, that is my goal too to extend the seasons and definitely have a year round garden. I have all of the necessary covers built. I would love to keep in contact to see how your doing later.

re: My first SFG
Hi Anna, if you want to use EMT (Electrical conduit), you will either need the 90 degree elbows that are prefabricated or you will need a conduit bender and bend them yourself (I did the latter, but I am an electrician). The two 90 degree fittings will cost you about $10. PVC works too using 90's for right angles but EMT will be stronger in the long run. If you read "Square foot gardening", it will show you how to build one, however it it really easy ACTUALLY AFTER READING I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE HOOP HOUSE OR THE TRELLIS FRAME - WHICH ONE?.
Cheers,

Re: My first SFG
Not the trellis, so I guess I'm talking about what you call the 'hoop house'. My goal is to construct a frame over which to position various kinds of fabric to protect against sun, insects, and frost later in the season. PVC won't work for my particular setup, it's too stiff for the dimension of the arch I need, a rather short span.
I hadn't realized that angle connectors are available for conduit. It makes sense, of course. There's a trip to the hardware store in my near future

As to the melons. Is one of the small fruit varietys possible. They may have a shorter season. I think they are called personal size?
I am using mason's twine also, and roofing nails. They have a large head. I nailed them almost all the way down, so the twine would slip in. The end tack is nailed all the way down to help hold the twine. I like having twine. I can reach underneath to the square below.
Maya what GORGEOUS strawberries!! Yummy!

I think you'll be able to manage melons! I can in Michigan 5a. i used a trellis last year, and will this year, but I am also experimenting with a well watered 5 gallon bucket and a ladder...
re: My first SFG
Chocolatepop - can you elaborate on growing melons in the 5 gal. bucket. I ran out of room in my SFG boxes and need to grow them somewhere else.

Re: My first SFG
sure Basically I grew 1/3 of my garden out of buckets last year, 3 and 5. I drilled drain holes in the bottom and around the sides about an inch up and put some rocks in the bottom (so the holes didnt get clogged with soil) and then used mels mix. Planted and let it go! This worked for the hoggie tomatoes so why not for a melon plant?
there are also small bushish watermelon plants.

Cool, what did you use and how did you attach for the trellis part?

Maya Papaya, your garden is beautiful! You are a very talented lady. Please keep posting photos. I would be interested if you would describe your drip system to us. I hope you try melons, I bet you will be pleasantly suprised. I am going to go to Home Depot and look for the mason line. I just used white nylon clothes line and nailed it down. Here is a

re: My first SFG
carolintexas, the drip system was pretty easy. My system is a pretty standard one consisting of:
At the hose bib I started with a Timer, filter, 30 psi pressure regulator attached to a 1/2" trunkline.
Run the 1/2" line to the beds and rise up with a 1/4" solid line to connect to a 1/4" soaker line that has emitter's built in the line. It distributes about 1/2 GPH.
