New England Mar 2018
I haven't seen anyone start this month's thread yet so I thought I should.
I hope to see pictures of seeds being started in the northeast soon.

Around here, looks like Spring is coming early! I saw purple crocuses blooming, and also saw a red winged blackbird! And just today, my first buzzard!
Time to plant some peas, maybe spinach and mache, however my beds are in a small bog...too wet to get back there!

Re: New England Mar 2018
Thanks for starting this thread, QB.
Saw some lily & tulip leaves poking their heads out but that's about it. No seeds started yet, which is good since I was without power for 3 days from that last nor'easter. Talk about March coming in like a lion!!!
Hopefully the next nor'easter that is just starting now won't be as bad.
Gotta go find a new avatar...

Re: New England Mar 2018
It was an easy day, thanks. But I couldn't do anything due to weather. My gal pals are taking me out for lunch this Saturday.
Just got this from Paul Parent...looks like I may be heading for attempt #s 8 & 9...or is it 9 & 10...
Blueberries:
The secret to growing blueberries is in the soil. Most important is that it must be acidic all the time, so never add lime or lime products near the plant. The more acidic the soil, the better they grow. The soil must also be well drained, and never have standing water around the plant. The more organic matter in the soil, the more fruit the plant will produce and the larger the fruit will grow. So be sure, when planting, that you use compost and a lot of it. Mulching around the plant should be done like we do to our shrubs and trees around the house. This will help the plant hold fruit during hot and dry summers. Two to three inches of organic matter around the blueberry plant is recommended at all times. You can use compost, pine needles, bark mulch, wood chips, even sawdust.
Blue Jay: Cold hardy and produces a large tasty crop in July
BlueRay: Cold hardy and produces extra large fruit in July
Blue Crop: Cold hardy and produces a big crop when planted with Early Blue in July
Early Blue: Cold hardy and produces a big crop of sweet berries when planted with Blue Crop in June
Patriot: Cold hardy with large fruit and heavy producer in June
Enjoy!

Re: New England Mar 2018
OK, so jealous!
I have no idea if I can deal with or grow blueberries! Would love to, but, again, I am a lazy gardener...so if it requires much ongoing attention, nope.
Strawberries? I am committing my (too shallow) 3x7 bed to them! Ordered the collection from Pinetree, 3 varieties, they will ship when right. I need to block the existing weed raged situation with newspaper, and layer new MM and go from there.
Excited to hear, CC!

Keeping in mind that I'm way south of y'all.... What we do for the blueberries is put mini pine bark nuggets down. It provides acid & acts as a mulch.
If you fertilize, look for azalea stuff. They're cousins, so it works well.

No, same thing..that is the concern...is the acidity. Good to hear.AtlantaMarie wrote:Keeping in mind that I'm way south of y'all.... What we do for the blueberries is put mini pine bark nuggets down. It provides acid & acts as a mulch.

We got 12" of new white snow with storm Skylar and no power outages. My dog had a tough time trudging thru it with her short legs.

Re: New England Mar 2018
Holy guacamole!!! Lucky you, QB, with no power outage. Looks like Penny is loving the snow!
We were without power for 2 days on this one. And I'm now the proud owner of 3 of my neighbors trees laying around in my yard. No damage to the house but the biggest one, the top 20' of a 40' scrub pine, is laying on my SFG!
My 'permanent' pea/bean trellis is history...crushed somewhere under that behemoth.
These storms are getting stronger. Looks like we get to play ball again next Tue/Wed.
Crud. Glad I haven't started my starts yet....

I'm glad you've got your power back. Hopefully the previous storms cleared out most of the weak branches/trees and you can keep your electricity this next round.

Great to hear you are all OK!

CC, I'm sorry for the damage. At least your home was spared.BeetlesPerSqFt wrote:CapeCoddess wrote:We were without power for 2 days on this one. Crud. Glad I haven't started my starts yet....Yikes! It's SFG not Hugelkultur! Better the garden than the house, and better now than the main part of the growing season but still!

Re: New England Mar 2018
Wow, CC, that's a mess for you. Let's hope the next storm isn't as mean. Good luck to you on the Cape.
Its warmed up enough here that some of the mess has been melting. I guess its all good for the ground water so I won't complain any longer.

CC, sorry to hear about the problems caused by the storm. Hopefully, you will be able to get your SFG back in order.

Re: New England Mar 2018
Thank you for your support and kind words everyone! Yes, I do feel so fortunate that my house was not damaged. The trees were removed yesterday and all that is left is the L-shaped permenant trellis debris, brush and cable wire. Once that is gone let the repairs begin!
TD, isn't it wonderful how the world can pull together and help each other when needed?! The electric guys that took the tree that was hanging in mid air all tangled in my electric and phone wires were from CT! So kind!
The little garlic sprouts are undamaged and hanging in there under the cable wire in next to last photo.

Re: New England Mar 2018
Yes, lots to do out there. But not yet. The next nor'easter starts tonight so maybe I'll get to it this weekend, along with starting my indoor seeds. With all the power outages I've haven't dared to start them. I'm so far behind, but the bucket of MM is now upstairs warming up...a step it the right direction.
Funny thing....I just called the Comcast to find out when they were going to come out and rehang that cable wire that's laying around everywhere. They are coming today! I said, can they wait til Friday? Nope.
So crazy.
