This is what I came up with. We have had thunderstorms the past few days (thankfully nothing like the horrendous rain in other parts of the country) and I was afraid some of my newest shoots would be damaged. So I cut off the tops of a bunch of 1-liter water bottles and used them. It kept off most of the direct pounding rain and now the sun is out, I am seeing some nice condensation inside, too!

I also sliced the main body of the water bottles into cylinders and have used those, too. They have a tendency to blow away, though... I've been using twigs to try to anchor them, or twist them into the ground, but I am afraid to dig them in too deeply lest I harm any roots. The bottle tops on the other hand seem to be low profile enough they don't catch the wind and have stayed in place so far.

Brilliant idea! I think I'll put out the word that I could use some 1 lt. bottles. I'm already gathering 2 lt bottles from friends to make my own "walls of water" for next spring. Folks around here are beginning to wonder about me... To protect those baby direct-sow seedlings.... Icon_rolleyes
