Tomato Tuesday 2016 - Page 8 Empty Re: Tomato Tuesday 2016

Post  BeetlesPerSqFt 7/30/2016, 8:19 pm

Thanks, Sanderson. I was noticing all the browned out no-tomatolet flowers at the top of my plants and was wondering if the heat was the cause. I've got quite a few tomatoes slowly ripening, but all those tomatoes-to-be that I won't get... Sad   I'm thinking my eggplants have been suffering as well; I've been seeing blossoms but they've been falling off very easily.

I assume the tomato plants recover once the temperatures cool down, and I'll get new growth, including new flower-bearing branches soon?

That's what I am hoping.

Tomato Tuesday 2016 - Page 8 Empty ID Please

Post  countrynaturals 8/5/2016, 3:09 pm

This is a volunteer "tomato" that sprouted in a bed I created for Dutchman's Pipe (for the pipevine swallowtail butterflies). I transplanted it in the sfg, but as it grew, the leaves lost their distinctive tomato plant shape. This morning I found this strange-looking fruit hanging on it. What in the world do I have here? (The fruit is about 2" long.)

hmmm.  The fruit looks like an immature butternut squash but the leaves do not look like a squash. Don't know.

I'm sure it's some kind of tomato, cuz it looked just like any other little tomato plant when it was a baby. I had never heard of a grape tomato, but I just talked to our daughter and she said it's possible that she brought one home and composted the seeds, so we may have solved this mystery.  Tomato Tuesday 2016 - Page 8 3170584802

The fruit hanging down off that plant looks fairly large.  My grape tomatoes are about twice the size of a cherry tomato.  So I don't think it is a grape tomato unless the size is deceptive in the picture.

This will sound very silly but doesn't it look like a very weird but green eggplant? Those leaves look more like eggplant leaves to me.  Pear tomatoes are very small and this thing looks much bigger (?).  There are varieties of white eggplant.   Also its in the nightshade family like tomatoes.  Interesting to see if it changes into another color.  Keep us posted!

DUH!  Embarassed I didn't mean "grape" tomato, I meant "pear" tomato. Now I'm wondering if I made the same mistake talking to my daughter. AARRGGHH! Senior moment! Evil or Very Mad It's not very big -- only a couple inches long. It's still green as of this morning. It's definitely a wait-n-see.  Rolling Eyes

Ya know, I'm also thinking eggplant... Although the leaves don't look right... Those certainly look like tomato.

Be interesting to see once it gets bigger!

I also posted this under the No Calif thread.

Two years ago, 2014, I had the leaf curl virus where leaves on tomatoes and some peppers curl under. No canning that year.

This year, 2016. I heard from the grapevine about this disease, where the leaves roll upward. Could be what I have, along with nutrient deficiencies. Both diseases have a leaf hopper vector. https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/ipc/curlytopvirus/ctv_hp.htm

I have a similar issue with a tomato plant I grew from seed this year...the tomatoes look like a cross between a cherry and san marzano...shape of a san marzano but the size of a husky cherry...every single fruit on the plant is like this...they are slowly turning red one at a time.

Look what jumped into my car today when I went shopping at Home Depot.  A Celebrity Tomato and a Heatmaster Tomato.  I doubt either one will be that great of a taste but I did not start any tomatoes from seed for a fall planting so this was the best I could do.

My first average frost date is 10/28.  The DTM of these is 75 days.  That means about Nov 1 they will start to ripen.  We usually get a light frost then a couple weeks later a heavy frost/freeze.  Many times we do not get our first killing freeze until around Thanksgiving.  These will be put in large pots so I could move them though it will be hard.  I also have the materials necessary to cover them if needed.  But of course they will grow slower because it will be colder later in the fall.  We shall see.  I tried to buy some transplants around 8/1 but they all looked about dead.  They must have gotten some new transplants in Home Depot because these look pretty good.  Not much of a selection but I took what they had.

Picked my biggest Black Krim tomato yesterday. 1lb 5oz. The slices fit perfectly on slices of bread for a wonderful BLT. I picked it a little early because it had developed a deep crack (back side of the photo of course), but it was still delicious and juicy.
