Remember this thread you guys? I thought it would be nice to resurrect this thread for 2016. I know y'all have some nice plants going. Let's show them off!

Yeah, yeah, I know: It's Thursday... but I like the ring of Tomato Tuesday, plus it's sentimental.

Here's my tomatoes for this year. I planted them early last month:

Windmere, do you use the large Jiffy pellets? I typically use the small ones and have great luck, however this year some seedlings are ready for light while others in the same tray have yet to germinate.

I'll post some pics this evening...I'm still a week or so away before true leaves appear.

Yep, those are the 50 mm ones that Jiffy advertises as specifically for tomatoes. I've decided to use these for the first time. I am liking the results.

I always have to do a "bridge" transplant before I actually plant them permanently. Usually I use peat pots. I plant permanently very late because our Georgia weather is notoriously fickle. It's a beautiful day today. Sunday it will be 35 degrees.

Using the larger Jiffy pellets buys me a little more time I think. I'm using the larger pellets for everything, including ornamentals. My wife wants lots of Zinnias and Cosmos again this year.

here are my tomato seedlings in small Jiffy pellets...I first thought the pellets were a problem since I'm at about 50% germination, but then I just remembered that I think I used last year's tomato seeds.

Ok, I was going to wait until after tomorrow (when I retire again) before posting pictures but I just couldn't wait. Here are some of my tomato transplants I first planted from seed on 2/14/16. The largest tomato is 10 inches from the soil level. This batch is ready to plant. I am just waiting until after this cold front passes through my area before I plant them in the garden. I have been hardening them off during the day but bringing them in at night. I am trying to wait until the night time temps stay above 50*F.

yolos...great looking plants! lows in the low 30's through the weekend so plants are coming inside as well...I shoot for planting in mid-may if all goes well.

Really, that late? I usually have mine out around the 1st of May, but this year, I may have them out sooner.

Long way to go. Those 5 oddballs in the front left four cells are brussel sprouts.

After taking the photo this morning I clipped all the extra Black Cherries down leaving 6, just in case.

Wow, you all are way ahead of me. I got peppers, eggplant and tomatoes planted today and it is snowing outside. I should have stayed in AZ Cool

This year I was extra careful and went very slowly and was absolutely sure that all tomatoes were correctly labeled so that I won't have ID problems like all the past years, right. Rolling Eyes

Mother's Day is kinda of a target date...maybe a bit sooner if forecasts look good. I'm about 15 minutes from the community garden so it's not convenient to plant then protect if the weather doesn't cooperate...then I have to make it out there again to uncover.

I may try first of May in my SFG beds at home...warmer soil, easier to cover and uncover, a bit more protected from wind, etc.

It seems like a sell a lot of seedlings to people who plant way too early...so with peppers and tomatoes I don't mind waiting a bit, however babysitting so many seedlings becomes a total pain.

Like Yolos, my tomatoes are ready to go out as soon as this freeze is over. (Along with onions, pumpkin, cabbage, a few swiss chard and some odds & ends.)

That makes sense. I've started a lot more than I will be using with the same idea in mind... sell a few to make back some of what I spent raising my own garden.

I always bring in my tomato seedlings at night. They "sleep" in our kitchen window box. This was my view while making up my coffee this morning:

I wasn't sure where to put this photo so I figured here is as good as anywhere. Check out this tomato seedling. The seed leaves still have the seed attached to them. Sometimes that happens and they usually grow out of it or die back. This one didn't but instead the seed leaves are still stuck together and the true leaves came up anyway. Isn't that amazing?! I tried an experiment yesterday...I grabbed a cup of water, razor blade, starting mix, deep cell tray, rooting hormone, and some potted-up tomatoes that have been hardening off in the last week or so.

My goal is to propagate some new plants from cuttings without having to re-seed and wait so long. For cuttings, I used either a larger healthy side stem, or snipped off an entire plant from pots that had doubles. I am trying with Carbon, Krim and a Hybrid called Health Kick.

The cuttings wilted a bit because I left them out in the warm weather a bit too long (partly cloudy) and perked right up as soon as I moved them inside. They're under a grow light today...may post some pics this evening. They'll have about a full month before planting...should be enough time.

I snipped off extra tomato seedlings from each pot and replanted them. It worked out great. See my repotted snipped seedlings below. They are very healthy and growing normally.

In my case, I was working 60-70 hrs a week in Feb (seed starting month). I did not have time to start seeds the normal method. So I ordered a Park's Bio-dome starting system. It comes with sponges that you plant your seed into a little hole in the sponge. Water is wicked up from the bottom. In order to insure I had good germination, I put 2 to 3 seeds in each sponge. I had almost 100% germination. Because the planting medium was sponges, I could not separate the seedlings in each sponge. So I cut (snipped) the seedlings at the soil level leaving one in each sponge. I hated to just trash those beautiful little seedlings. So I set them in water for a while then planted in soil. Snipped = clipped = cut down.
