Wow those arugula microgreens that I am growing are powerful. I took just one set of tiny leaves into my mouth and the taste was very strong. To be honest I'm not sure I like it.
Today is the start of two weeks of Winterlude in Canada's Capital. It's a fun event for the whole family.

As well the world's largest skating rink is open.

Aragula: TD, I am sure that you will soon get to like them as it must be an acquired taste. Like Marmite?

I'm not a fan of arugula either. Maybe I should just keep trying.

I think when the snow has melted off my SFGs I will have to place another layer of leaves on them to protect from any sudden sub-zero weather. I have several bags of dry fall leaves tucked away so I am hoping I can get through to spring without everything being killed with the cold.
Has anyone else in the Great White North or the U.S.A. North had any experience of little snow, and warming weather followed by intense cold? There is a forecast of cold coming down from the Arctic.
When the Arctic Vortex hit us, what, 2 or 3 years ago? I lost tons of perennials, especially shrubbery/butterfly bushes/etc. There was no warm up in between though....just COLD. I think the super cold then thaw thing would be hard on root systems from a physics standpoint, freezing/thawing, expanding/shrinking....
Turns out the butterfly bush isn't the best thing for sustainability of the butterflies. We should be planting milkweed, parsley, etc. Blessing in disguise?

I am not a lover of kale, but I do like chard and spinach, but has grown wonderfully well so I keep on growing it and mixing it with the other stuff. I know it is good for me.
Re: CANADIAN REGION: What are you doing in January 2016
Had our first rainbow chard tonight. I picked enough from 4 plants for the two of us to eat for 2 nights. Love it, including the stems.
Re: CANADIAN REGION: What are you doing in January 2016
That Bright Lights chard is so pretty and tasty! I planted it in front of my pole beans and that worked really well, and looked nice too! I like it sautéed with garlic, EVOO, and a bit of sweet onion. Splash of soy sauce optional! Soon......
