Fridge disaster = compost bonanza
Yesterday morning , something was amiss with the 2nd floor fridge. The freezer temperature is normally -20C, but it was up to -10. Fiddling with the control panel didn't do much, and it leveled off at -2.
Needless to say this was awkward. It's not that old, so my wife called the company's support number. They said we could have a technician by this morning.
Happily, I keep my own separate kitchen on the 3rd floor, so it was possible to save many critical frozen items and shove others into the fridge compartment.
This morning, it got worse. The freezer compartment hovered around zero (frozen bottles of water changed to half-frozen and stayed that way). but the fridge compartment temperature started climbing. The tech finally showed up in the afternoon, pronounced it broken (coolant leak ), and said a couple of guys would come and take it back to the factory for servicing tomorrow morning. The good news is that it's still under warranty.
Yes, that's right. They plan to send 2 guys out in the morning (or afternoon - these things aren't very predictable) to carry the fridge down the stairway (it only took 4 guys to get it up the stairs) and take it back to the factory. I guess they don't trust their field techs to find and fix a small coolant leak.
This left us evacuating all the remaining items out of the dying fridge. So, it came down to these questions:
1. What HAS to be frozen?
2. If it doesn't have to be frozen, does it HAVE to be refrigerated?
3. Hey! How old is that? (often accompanied by me asking "What the heck is that?" for some of the more bizarre Chinese items hiding in back)
and . . .
4. Can it be composted?
The compost I make is strange enough, but now it's got all sorts of very bizarre items normally used for Chinese medicinal tea joining the mix. I think I deserve bonus points on how many kinds of things are mixed into my compost.
Bonus - My wife sometimes complains about me having wasted money by setting up my own separate kitchen. Not today.

LOL!! That's great! I'll give you bonus points! Sounds like to me you're exceeding the recommended "5 types" of compost items to get a good "blend".
I'm particularly tickled with your situation because it gives me hope that maybe I haven't gone insane or at least I'm not alone. I find myself "thinking" differently now that I'm composting. Example, garage door was left up and a bat came in to roost in our garage. When a bat roosts in the garage it leaves... "surprises" on the garage floor. That's gross, I'll sweep that up and throw it away.... wait a minute... it's poop, you can compost poop right? It wan't even anywhere near a dust pan full, but I couldn't help myself, into the compost pile it went.
Hey, like they say, when life gives you lemons, you throw them in the compost pile or something like that.

At least it was under warranty! And any excuse to go thru the fridge & clean it out is a good one... sorta...

I may have a stereotype image but I can picture 2 small Chinese men wrestling a big fridge down the stairs.

HAHA! Yup, I do that with bunny poop on top of the snow in spring.Zmoore wrote: I find myself "thinking" differently now that I'm composting. That's what I do with the occasional deer or duck poop that appears on my lawn.
Re: Fridge disaster = compost bonanza
And bear poop and wild turkey poop and Canada Geese poop.
Do I get three points for that?

Some of them aren't so small, but many are. This is a BIG refrigerator, so they'd better send in a couple of weightlifters.
Hope they show up today. We're travelling next week, and I'd like to get this thing sent off to the factory before we leave.
Re: Fridge disaster = compost bonanza
EL, Keep us posted. (would love to see a photo of 2 men wrestling that frig down the stairs.

I was hoping someone would ask that. About the time they got it into the stairwell, I grabbed my camera. As soon as they got it far enough down, I went up a couple of steps towards the 3rd floor and got this:
I was impressed. They got it down to the landing and managed to get it turned around before taking it the rest of the way.
Supposedly, it might be ready to come back tomorrow, but I have my doubts. I'd prefer they keep it while we're out of town, plugged in and running so they can verify that everything works right.

WOW! Makes my back hurt just looking at that! I can't believe they wouldn't try to figure out the problem before doing that!

And, the much anticipated . . .
Return of the Fridge!
They almost dropped it just before getting to the landing.

Re: Fridge disaster = compost bonanza
Yeah sure does.
I hope they didn't get it all dinged and scratched up in the process of bringing it back and forth.

Part of the joy of living in the tropics - sandals are about as common as shoes. Personally, I wear flip flops most of the time.
Amazingly they only put a few small scratches on it.
