Tomato yields
I'm doing a report on square foot gardening versus row gardening. Does anyone know what kind of yields I can expect from beefsteak and Roma tomatoes in manitoba? In lbs...

Re: Tomato yields
Liesbet, Welcome to the Forum from California, US. To find out the answer, one would have to grow a sufficient number of plants (for statistic significance) of both types under both conditions. The one thing about square foot gardening is that a well made Mel's Mix can allow a plant to reach its genetic potential.

Hi Liesbet. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!
When does your report need to be turned in? Will you have time to grow your own & take pics?

Re: Tomato yields
No I won't have time to grow a garden before the report should be done. What have others found- has the yield doubled or??

Re: Tomato yields
I don't really know if the yield will be greater per plant. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this...
BUT - you use less land and water w/ SFG.
The problem with row gardening is that you're walking between (maybe long) rows (and compacting the soil). So you have to leave room (about 3 feet) between rows.
With SFG, you're not walking on it, so you don't need that walkway.
I can plant 1 tomato per square foot. In a 25'x2' row, that's 50 plants in 50'. In a regular 25' row garden, you'd need at least 125'. (2' for the plants = 50', plus a 3' walkway between them = 75'.)
Hope this helps... I take it you've read All New SFG (2nd Edition) as part of your research?

Re: Tomato yields
Ok that tells me some... Thanks! I read the old SFG book and I hadn't realized there was a new one.

Re: Tomato yields
Oh, yes! Check your local library for the 2nd Edition.
I've read all 3. It gets better & easier with each new edition!

Re: Tomato yields
There is also an old, old book back when dirt was also used. The current method is described in All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition.
