hi,
am glad to have found this forum. I reside in chicago. the park district here has allowed me to put up a hoop house over my 4 x 8 plot to experiment/learn about winter gardens.
that's how i got here. became a fanatic, studying 8 hrs/day!!! so much to learn and lots of people willing to share. immediately looked up sfgarden in my library and they have it!!! have put a hold on it. have not had time to read thru this forum as i just joined a few minutes ago. i find winter gardening fascinating!!

Jarity, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here

I'm so glad you have reserved the book. It has all the basics to get started, and to continue. After you have read the book, you will probably want to buy the book (I got mine gently used online) so you can make notes and put sticky tabs on ideas. A 4' x 8' plot is a nice size to work with. We are here to help you if you have any questions. And we love photos, the good, the bad and the ugly! Very Happy

Jarity, We love to help Newbies. Very Happy Winter is a slow time for gardening, even here in mid California there is only so much we can grow. With a green house, we can extend the season at the beginning and at the end. But, only so much.

This is the time of the year where (No. Hemisphere) we can research and explore topics on the internet. In about 2 months, folks will be posting their indoor seedlings under fluorescent lights.

Hi AtlantaMarie,
i will try to keep U up on what i am learning in order to teach U a lesson in boredom!! U guys R so over my head U will only chuckle!!
your foot note:
"To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul. "      Simone Weil        French Philosopher  (1909-1943)
it was meaningful to me at this time of my life.
here is also something i found that i thought might be of interest to the the community??. i pinched it from another website. INDEED!!!
'“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”
― Wendell Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture"

Oh, I like that!  Thank you for posting it.

I think the big thing to remember is that it's all a learning process...  We each have successes & failures.  Post both & learn from everyone you can.  Your postings will help teach others.  That way, we all win!

Hugs!
