Garlic beds
I cleaned out and recharged and planted my garlic beds but I left some bolting cilantro in the bed. I did this last year and we never ran out of cilantro, we just let it go and it reseeds an just keeps going on. Best idea I wish I had.

Hello johnp,
Your bed looks good and square. What kind of garlic did you plant and how much?

Re: Garlic beds
As you look at the photo. the three rows from left to right are planted with soft neck organic Pueblo early Seed garlic. It is suppose to be medium hot, full flavor and a long storage life. Each square is planted with 6 to 7 cloves. The cilantro will reseed and come up in the spring and it won't interfere with the growing garlic and as the spring grown cilantro bolts and goes to seed again the cilantro will be available in Aug and Sept. for all the salsa's. Works great. The row on the right is planted with organic Sante Shallot planted four per square. First time for shallots so I don't know if the spacing is right or not but from the size of the shallots I planted it looks right.
After the garlic and shallots start growing and it freezes the bed will be covered with straw and watered when we can throughout the winter.

Re: Garlic beds
Jimmy cee if I would have increased the view and you saw the next bed at the top of the picture you wouldn't use the word neat. This bed and the one not seen at the top of the photo are the only ones on the west side of my house and they are shaded about half the time. The garlic and onion types (leeks etc.) do well but other stuff doesn't so next year the other bed will be planted with leeks, fennel and maybe some onion sets.

Hi Kay I am jealous you have finished! I need at least 36 to 40 squares to plant garlic. It's ok since there are 10 boxes but between Japanese visitors coming this weekend and all the preparations I'm still not finished with planting. Argghh.

Re: Garlic beds
Planted 108 garlic bulbs a week or so ago. Covered with leaves and will cover over with my expected woodchips. I have inter-planted with pink tulips.
Re: Garlic beds
I am amazed at how much garlic you guys must eat if you're planting 40 squares of it, LOL! WOW! I planted some Elephant garlic and some regular. Maybe 40 cloves in all? We eat a little but not that much. My first sprouts are up. We don't freeze, just have frosts so they'll actually grow all winter here and finish up in the spring.
Re: Garlic beds
Audrey, I'm more like you. I managed to get 21 cloves in 3 squares before turning to the rental. I would really like to have more if they will come up with planting next week.
Re: Garlic beds
Audrey,
I'm growing a bunch of garlic for a chef that wants to purchase it. Otherwise I wouldn't grow so much for this 2 person household.

O I LIKE this idea!Kelejan wrote: I have inter-planted with pink tulips.
Tomorrow I must go find some tulip or daffodil bulbs to do this with. I am excited.
I planted 100 cloves in 12 squares and am worried it is not enough. That is only 2 bulbs per week. We eat a lot of garlic!

Re: Garlic beds
My garlic bulbs just arrived and I am going to plant them today or tomorrow. How deeply do you all plant the bulbs. I have been researching this and get conflicting information. Here are the four different depths that I have found:
2 inches deep
4 - 6 inches deep
1 - 3 inches deep
2 - 3 inches deep
I am in the south and don't know if that makes a difference. The University of Ga website said 2 inches deep. Does that mean from the bottom of the bulb or the top of the bulb.

Re: Garlic beds
In the gardening for dummies book, seed depth planting in general should be 3 times the length of the seed.
In case no other answers are suitable.
Top or Bottom....I'd then do the middle.

Re: Garlic beds
Your answer is in Step 3. I'm up north so I plant mine 2 inches deep -- measuring from the top of the clove

Re: Garlic beds
Thanks for your link llama mamma. The answer in that report was to cover the bulb with 3/4 to 1 inch of soil. I planted them with the bottom at 2 inches. Therefore, the top was covered with about 1 inch of soil.

Since you found conflicting statements I was hoping this sounded good to you. I get really nice results with their recommendation and I hope all goes well for you too.

Re: Garlic beds
We have had unusual amounts of rain over the last week or so. Tuesday into Wednesday was 5 inches. Very little sun over the last week and not much better forcasts for the next week (except sunny today). Also, this time of year I only get about 4-5 hours of sun on the garlic bed. My garlic bulbs sprouted and are about 6 - 10 inches tall and heavily mulched with shredded hay that has become slightly compacted. I am worrying about the poor bulbs rotting. Should I remove the mulch today and let the ground and mulch dry out some and then replace the mulch after it dries out. My only concern is that it is going down to 30* tonight. There are also shallots in this bed.
