Harvested 2 squares of Potatoes (Kennebec) today.  4.5 pounds.  7 more squares of this variety are not quite ready and the russets I planted are much later.  Hope the frost doesn't come to make that decision for me.

You can harvest the tubers anytime before the ground freezes.

Finished the Kennebec harvest.  6 squares and 10 pounds of spuds.  That makes a total of 14.5 lbs from 8 squares.  I think I will have enough to get me through the winter since I don't need that many for 1 person.

Going to take the tiny ones and make some serious fried potatoes to go with some eggplant.  (Bacon grease for the potatoes)  I know, it's fattening but a few times a year - oh my goodness, I'm old and am planning to enjoy food while I still can.   tongue

Russets are still green.  Hope they are making lots of baking potatoes.

Curing on the dining room table.  Where else.   tongue
I thought there were 7 squares after the first harvest but only 6.  That makes the average square producing about 1.8 pounds per square.  Last year it was 2.8 pounds per square.  I knew it would not be as much.  This was a strange year all around.  Squash, cucumbers almost none.  Oh well, I have lots of carrots, parsnips, lima beans, tomatoes, herbs, beets and strawberries.  That aught to get me into next year.

What lovely success!  Looks like you have lots and lots of nice potato meals in your future.  Nothing wrong with bacon fat on occasion!  It makes my New England clam chowder taste fantastic.

Potatoes - First Harvest of Potatoes Empty Re: First Harvest of Potatoes

Post  greatgranny 9/10/2014, 10:47 am

I am so grateful that I harvested them yesterday.  When I was setting them out I noticed one was a bit strange so when I was going to make my fried potatoes I chose that one even though it was not a small potato.  It was awful.  Mushy on the inside.

I am not going to add that potato to the compost.  It resembled what the seed potato looks like after it has done it's job to make a new potato plant.  The outside seemed normal except for one small spot that was my clue.  Wish I would have taken a picture but I got rid of it into the garbage.  We have had a very wet year and I wonder if that would be part of the problem.  All the rest of the potatoes are okay.

Potatoes - First Harvest of Potatoes Empty Harvested the last of everything

Post  greatgranny 10/9/2014, 3:26 pm

The garden is officially harvested.

Today I cleaned up the tomatoes that were not ripe but are going to be used for green tomato mince meat (the small ones) and the rest left to ripen.  The total for this year's red brandywines:  40 lbs.

Had a cardboard box with about the equivalent of 2 squares of Russet potatoes.  4 lbs

Counting the Kennebec 14.5 lbs from before that is a good bunch for my larder.

I'm relieved that the season is done for me.  I'm tired and need the winter to recoup.  We oldies need that.

Oh well, one more thing that I forgot about - I still need to plant the garlic and multiplier onions but that's an easy task.

Thanks.

The frost finally got too cold even with blankets covering things, last night.  When that happens it's time to stop and rescue what is left and call it done.

So far, this is the best potato harvest I've managed!  We'll have to wait and see how the rest turns out.

SR, I don't know how long you need to cure the potatoes. Mine are gone the same day!
