Sept tomatoes

The foliage from these plants are no longer looking vigorous, but at least its still producing-

Llama Momma, that's quite a harvest! They look delicious! I've harvested about 10 of my Brandywines, which are still putting on tomatoes. They've weighed anywhere from 14 oz. to 1 lb. 6 ozs. They're beautiful and sweet, but they're not as acidic as I'd like. Any suggestions on a tomato that's big for sandwiches, is sweet, but still has an acidic kick?

I wish I had an answer to your question. I've been growing pretty much all heirlooms and I believe those tend to be less acidic overall. If someone else doesn't chime in I bet you could Google your question.

I've got 14 qts canned so I think these will become soup and V8 juice.

Why not try Beefmaster and/or Champion? Cherokee Purple also has a good flavor balance, including some acidity.

I'm awaiting ripening of my Big Rainbow tomatoes. Last year's attempt with this variety was a complete bust, but I should get a couple of them soon. I'll also report on Costoluto Genovese, once they ripen.

Keeping my fingers crossed as our average first frost date nears (Sept. 7).

Arkansas Traveler? The one tomato I got before disease forced me to take it out reminded me of childhood where the tomatoes would eventually burn the corners of your mouth.

llama momma, so yummy looking. What are the round yellow tomatoes? I grew Yellow Taxis this year. They were very prolific. The were supposed to be less acidic, but I think they were on the acidic side. Very good bush tomato.

Some of those are the tastiest ones, IMO. Real wild flavor.

The little yellow tomatoes are called Weissbehaarte a vining type. Baker's Creek says its an old German heirloom. They are juicy and sweet. It the first thing my husband swipes off the table. hungry

I'm having a terrible time w/ most of mine cracking around the stems. Variety doesn't seem to matter much... Golden Jubilee's are really bad...

I had the worst run of san marzano paste toms, it was my first time growing those and nearly every one was very small, red on the outside and black moldy junk on the inside> I was horrified as I've never seen this in 4 years of sq. ft. gardening. On the flip side Jersey Giant paste toms were fantastic, 5 to 6 inches long and large diameter too, and very meaty. Will be growing a lot more of those next year.

Yesterday, I picked one of my champion tomatoes.

Also, I had a tooth extracted. So, I don't know when I can eat that tomato, since it has seeds, albeit soft ones.

Although the weather websites indicated no chance of frost last night, my thermometer read 34F this morning, and there was frost on the neighborhood's rooftops.

So far, though, the garden seems to be okay. I plan to cover some of the plants tonight, just to be on the safe side.

When I had a tooth pulled and when they inserted an implant, I would make smoothies of my regular meals. I would place a thick square of gauze over the site to keep food out, and then spoon or drink my meals.

Thanks for your concern. I think I'm okay, but I'm very weak and tired. I love Sanderson's idea and may do something similar with smoothies.

Meanwhile, I have to stay awake part of the time to monitor the weather forecast. Last night's lows were supposed to be in the 39 - 46F range.

My lunch favorites were smoothies of canned lentil and minestrone soups. For dinner, high fiber (oat or whole wheat) spaghetti and sauce with steamed broccoli. I made broccoli into soup by adding milk and butter. No fresh ground pepper, though, to prevent a pesky piece from the wound. Keeping the fiber up prevents a second discomfort while you are recovering, if you get my drift.

I had just the opposite of what llama momma had with the san marzanos. I lost three of my first planting of my paste tomatoes to frost and went to the greenhouse and bought romas and one san marzano. The two romas were not romas but some dark red pool ball sized bland tomatoes but the san marzano has gone nuts, the best producer I have had. All in all the best year ever for tomatoes, we have almost filled up the freezer and the shed freezer with tomatoes and sauce.
