Potatoes - My harvest Empty My harvest

Post  cyclonegardener 7/9/2014, 11:34 pm

I just harvested 10 pounds of potatoes in an eight square foot section.
Noticed two fairly good size melons in my patch. Watermelon has several on it.
Tomatoes are nearly seven feet high and several on right now. Just harvested my first pepper.
I planted cotton to see if it would grow and it just started to flower.
Everything is going great. Perhaps the best gardening summer I have ever had. Perfect weather (70s and 80s), just enough rain (1 inch a week). I also noticed the field corn is starting to grow ears.
Love the square feet concept. I raise everything in beds and use Mel's mix.

Congratulations on having a great season so far!

What possessed you to make you want to plant cotton?

Cylcone--
My potato plants are dying down and turning yellowish.  Looking forward to pulling some pretty soon.  Did you have a potato beetle problem this year??   I am shocked to find just one so far.  This year I kept marigolds and anise hyssop next to the potatoes, maybe that helped along with bringing in natural predators.  4 years and I still feel like such a newbie.  Wink

I am just starting to see the first of the black cherry tomatoes start to ripen...I need to check my plot at the community garden as well...probably a few red tomatoes ready to pick...received another nice rainstorm a few days ago so very little watering by hand so far this year.  Cukes almost picked every day.

Llama Mamma, no, I didn't have any of the beetles. This is the first time I haven't noticed them.

CycloneG
Interesting!   Wonder if the cold winter interrupted the life cycle.  Last summer my potatoes were infested. Daily hand picking, spraying, nothing worked.  This year the plants are clean.

I think you are right. I think the extremely cold winter affected several of the pests that I normally fight at this time of year.

I'll mention another thing I'm not seeing  -- yet-- is bean beetles.  Zero. Wonder if the extreme cold got them too.   Unless its not time yet for them to show up, I just don't know.  But my beans have had 2 Japanese beetles that were disposed of, and a real surprise has been maybe 10 fireflies of all things walking on the leaves.  Have no idea if they cause damage so I've just flicked them off into the grass.

I haven't seen many of the moths that morph into loopers either.

I've been squishing Colorado Potato Beetles for a few weeks now. I've made it a game. Early morning and then at dusk they seem to get all excited. I use my flipflops. Every time it rains, it also rains beetles. I guess they come up out of the soil and I'm ready for them. Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad

Post  Turan 10/1/2014, 2:35 pm

I just dug up the last of the potatoes.  16 sf planted with 2.33 lbs, that was 13 plants. I companion planted with broccoli.  Mulched with pine needles.  Total harvest was 65 lbs.  27.8lb/1lb planted. That is my largest harvest ratio yet.  My notes say I planted mixed fingerlings, but these mostly seem to be a new cultivar called 'Huckleberry' with some red fingerlings as well.  I think the boxes must of gotten garbled at the nursery.  Huckleberry variety are a variegated red inside as well, very cool looking.
