HAIL!  Looks like my pepper seedlings may have come through unscathed...not sure about veggies already in the garden...or potted up tomato seedlings.

Yikes. Hope your stuff is okay. Nothing much we can do about something like hail unless we want to grow everything indoors. Good thing it's early enough in the season so that you can start over if your plants are truly torn up.

We had hail about midnight a month ago and the hail melted and then froze together in sheets around my seedlings.  Surprisingly I only lost a couple things.  Even my squash came through perfectly after being stunted for a couple of weeks.  I hope you have the same luck!

I feel your pain.  We just had hail yesterday.  Fortunately most of the leafies were covered in tulle, ready for the cabbage butterfly.

How is one ever supposed to know when it's coming if it's not in the forecast?   thinking

April, with a lot of cold air aloft in the upper atmosphere, is the king of hail!

Followed by May. (Even when Vermont normally don't get a ton of T-storms in April and May) (T-storm season usually starts in June for Vermont and New Hampshire)

Good to know, RJ.  I've never seen hail here before, only sleet.  Guess I'll cover all the leafies for April & May from now on.

It tends to happen when having higher temps with a pool of cold air in the jet stream.

You're gonna see a lot of that type of talk on TWC for the current 2 months.

The air in the upper atmosphere levels even out to more like the lower levels by the summer, so it's hard to see hail from a T-storm in August, for example.

But, despite that, the chance of lightning increases during the summer months in New England. Usually just lightning bolts and torrential downpours at that point.
