Anyone have asparagus yet?

In 2013 some forum members planted asparagus crowns. I did too.
Have yours popped up yet?? I'm having a lot of temperatures now in the 50' and 60's.
Mine have not shown up yet so I'm wondering if the brutal cold winter ruined my hopes.

Do you have a thermometer you can stick in the soil 3-4 inches? The crowns will start sending shoots when soil temperatures warm to 50F and higher. Most places north of the Ohio River are still below that magic number. I've got at least a couple weeks until I start seeing my asparagus this year. Garlic - Anyone have asparagus yet? Showmap

I have about 8-9 sticking up. I harvested 3 to go with my dinner tonight... just couldn't stand it Wink

Bob - what variety did you plant ? I keep meaning to plant some but get hung up on trying to decide where to put the bed, how deep to make the bed, and what variety to plant.

Hi yolos, I used 1X10's and dug down a few inches deeper below the soil surface. Filled the dig back to the surface with some good top soil and then filled the bed to within 1" of the top with Mel's mix. I planted the Washington variety 2 years old as recommended by my nursery for this area. They have done really well.

Glad to see all the replies to my question.
Jmsieglaff-- my thermometer said 48 to 50 degrees in different parts of the bed. Need more patience I guess.
BNoles, your spears look fantastic and I hope the taste exceeded your expectations. I'm So looking forward to growing my own. Received the supermarket flyer this week and the store is selling organic asparagus @ $3.49/lb. Another supermarket had it @ $3.99/lb. I want my own!

When I planted crowns last year it all grew like crazy, so I snapped just one off and it was so tender and sweet. Please let yourself eat at least one or two!

no sign of mine. I started some from seed 3 years ago, and planted crowns 2 years ago, and actually planted more crowns last week.
However no sign of them yet. I have on my calendar that last year they showed up on April 11th. This year the ground is MUCH colder, so likely not for awhile.

okay. Twist my arm, LM, and I'll do as you say. Hehe.

I have found some plants at the local Agway. They're called Jersey Night but are only one year old. 10 for 8.99. How does that sound? would I need to get too bunches for 2 people?

My purple passion males are supposed to arrive any day. Please align that the Post Office or other carrier doesn't stop them.

You guys have such a deal. I think I'm paying something like 4 dollars each for three year old plants. We have a beautiful bed waiting for them.

Jersey Knight is a hardy, mostly male variety. By all means, get two bunches!

Get as many as you can!!! That is a GREAT price! The only 'gus available here in town is 2 crowns for $7.99!

I am going out right now to see if enough snow has melted off the bed to find any spears. All our snow had melted and it was starting to look like spring, then about 12-16 inches in one day! It is a gorgeous 52F right now and the whole next week is supposed to be the same. There may be some digging and planting in my VERY near future!

Update: Most of the snow is off the 'gus bed, but under the layer of leaves the ground is still frozen solid. RATS!!!

I bought two packages of asparagus but they are in plastic bags with wood shavings. I wasn't able to plant them today. Should I put them in water? I'll be able to plant them tomorrow for sure.

When I planted mine last year, I had to wait a few days so I could amend the bed they were going in. I made sure I sprinkled them with a bit of water and wrapped them in burlap while they were waiting to be planted. They did great! Just don't let the crowns dry out. Happy planting!

Something dug in my asparagus bed and exposed a few of the crowns. Such a bummer! It's like I have to start all over again. I buried them and covered the ditch with chicken wire. Hopefully that will keep the critters out. Has anyone else had this problem when planting their asparagus crowns?

My person in North Carolina wanted to renege on the order as she is sure they will not grow here in Hawaii. I told her we have had them, my neighbor has them and sent a link for a farm here that sells them. She said she is keeping my emails as a record in case I complain. Whatever Zone thing she reads says they won't grow in Hawaii.

And then -- there was a delay in the Post Office tracking messages and I thought "oh no, some inspector has refused them".. However, the package was slightly damaged, no damage to the crowns hence the delay. I was holding my breath all of Friday until they were in my hands. My grandson, Collin, planted them yesterday in a 4 by 7 sf box. Deeper.

I will let you all know the results.
