A welcome visitor

We had a welcomed visitor to our gardens yesterday.  I think it is a juvenile from the appearance of his markings.  I hope it stays around and keeps the squirrel population in check.

Seeing your photo reminds me of an incident I just love to tell.
During my career at a large coal generating station in Pennsylvania I managed to revive a baby red tailed hawk.
I found 2 of them laying in fly ash close to the bottom of a 1200 foot stack, soaked in fly ash and not being able to move I gently laid them in a small cardboard box.
After giving one to a co-worker who was a bird lover, I took it home and cleaned up the little thing as best I could.
Must have done ok because in a short time he was perked up and fluttering.
During the period this bird was taken care of by my 2 sons, I think it became part of our family, feeding it raw meat it grew to where it was able to fly.
We let it out thinking it would fly away, however it never left our area. It would take off, fly around the neighborhood and always come back.
After keeping it a few months we needed to go on a trip, I gave the hawk to a friend, he kept it in the back of his pick up, always allowing the bird to take off if wanted.
The hawk was full grown, healthy, and beautiful..  Finally one day the hawk never returned to the pick up..
The other bird found that night also survived, and found freedom.
A very rewarding experience

We have a family of hawks around here.  Every once in a while, one will perch in our pecan tree.

Nice visitor Bob! I prefer seeing neat looking hawks around here than those bald headed turkey vultures, those guys are useful too, but Ugly.  Those big guys sit together on my pasture fence. Deciding who's the ugliest one of all?
