The planted SFG. The herbs are on the north side. I have the following planted:
Lemon Thyme, Parsley, Rosemary, Oregano.

The vegetables are: 5 green cabbage and 6 red cabbage. I have 1 box left, I will put something colorful in that spot.
The weather is changing, and getting cooler. The plants my not have time to do their all, but I wanted to plant something and get some experience before the spring season arrives.

I think you'll be successful and then become as addicted to gardening as the rest of us, LOL!

As the days shorten, things will grow much more slowly, it isn't just winter temperatures that impact the garden. So don't get discouraged if it seems like nothing is happening. Once the winter solstice passes things will pick up again going into spring.
Enjoy :-)

Yeah I was thinking about making a miniature greenhouse to go around it as the temperature drops, help to keep it a little warmer. Just trying to learn a few things about SFG before spring get here. Shocked

Great start!

Have you considered planting onions or garlic in your one remaining spot? Garlic might be a good one, because it discourages so many pests, and you have so cabbages there that it's almost a monoculture.

I'd also strongly consider row cover. It's a great way to keep the pests away, and will extend your growing season. Very helpful keeping away the cabbage moth, they say. It makes nasty caterpillars.

Thanks for the information, I will see if I can find some garlic sets anywhere. I didn't find much when I was plant shopping. Can you just plant the garlic that you buy in the store.

For the top I thinking about a 4 sided item with a roof, covered in plastic sheeting. Where can you find the row cover you were talking about.

Thanks

Cajun,  Yes, you can plant grocery store garlic cloves.

A couple of non-staged photos of PVC frames with 3.5 mm sheet plastic covers, secured with large binder clips.  Secured in place by slipping the PVC over rebar stakes.  The sheets of plastic were cut to fit the frames, then re-opened to let sunlight in or get reflected in.  I can also use the frames for tulle netting in the summer against the dreaded cabbage green worm butterfly!  I will spray paint the PVC a sage green color in the spring.  I told you these were non-staged!  None of the joints are glued so I can easily dismantle for storage.

My 1st SFG, opinion wanted Empty Update, added cover: have question

Post  Cajunsmoke14 10/22/2013, 6:12 pm

Well I added the row cover, my question is:

Should I cover the plants tonight, or have the cover on but with the ends open.? It is supposed to get in the 50's tonight. I know cabbage likes cool weather.

Also if I put the cover on should I take it off in the morning. It will get in the 70's tomorrow. I was thinking that even with the ends open, the plants might burn.

Nice bed and great cover! Doesn't it feel exciting?!?

We're going down to low 40's tonite and I'm not covering. Once it gets into the 30's I'll pick all my summer veggies and start covering the fall crops: My 1st SFG, opinion wanted 100_0310

Behind that hoop tunnel bed is this dome bed and another tunnel bed: My 1st SFG, opinion wanted 100_0213

Once we go below 40 I'll put up the row cover.  Mid 30's I'll probably break out the plastic.  If the days go back above 40 I'll uncover.  If below 40 and sunny I'll probably unclip the covers to allow air flow but keep them on.

You think the herbs will be okay in the 50's? Tomorrow night it says in the high 40's. I guess I will uncover them; I don't want them to get to hot.

By the way your beds are beautiful My 1st SFG, opinion wanted 3170584802 , I can't wait until the spring to expand things. Playing it small right now to learn a few things.

Oregano, rosemary and thyme are perennials in my neck of the woods, and probably in yours.  You can leave them to die back and pop up again next year. My parsley will be potted up to come indoors when I hear it'll go below 40.  I've already potted up and brought in the basil.  It's a bit fussy so even 50 can make it balk. Wink

I'd keep an eye on the oregano.  It spreads in my garden, as does thyme.

Well this morning I have put a temporary fence around my box, I just stapled some chicken wire to the box and tied it to my pvc supports. Tomorrow I will pick up some scrap wood at work and make some frames for my wire; make it pretty lol.

Apparently I have a varmint, maybe an armadillo. Something got in my box and threw out my dirt, but they didn't eat my plants.

While working on my fence I noticed one of my garlic bulbs is coming up.

Well that it for now, on to the rest of the day!!

I'm having that problem with squirrels.  They knocked over some Rainbow chard this morningj.  grrrrrr....

But an armadillo would make a much bigger mess, I'm sure.  Evil or Very Mad  Good luck.

Hi cajun
I strongly recommend this you tube presentation for your area, this fellow is in your part of the country and does a remarkable job of explaining how to do things in gardening...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC07PYjpZ-BWlxLBC4T1lOhg

Even though he isn't an SFG planter, he has an amazing talent for presenting his way of doing things.

Second the advice about oregano and thyme.  I have oregano planted in an inground bed.  Lost my thyme plants this year but will plant regular and lemon thyme in individual pots next year.
