Garden Huckleberries Anyone????
Hello,
We are new to the group, as of today as a matter of fact. We have 4 rows of Garden Huckleberries, each row holding 30 plants. This is our first year with growing the Garden Huckleberries, and now that it is time to harvest (they are dull in color, and went through a couple of light frosts) we are having a time trying to find recipes.
We found a thread from last year, but it didn't appear that too many people have really used these abundant little fruits. So, if you have, and have any recipes to share, we'd be very grateful. We found a couple of different opinions of how to go about preparing them, but thought we'd seek out others trials too.
Blessings,
C & A

Garden Huckleberries
I have heard that you can use huckleberries in the same way you use blueberries, but I'm not sure of the source of this info. Could be Joy of Cooking. Good luck with them!

Re: Garden Huckleberries Anyone????
I have heard they need cooking and sweetening but then can be used any way you would use blue berries.
I am guessing that the tricks to their use may pertain to Indigo Rose tomatoes as well.

Re: Garden Huckleberries Anyone????
We've grew garden huckleberries for two years, and were underwhelmed. But, then, we live where there are wild mountain huckleberries, and we have some domestic blueberry bushes. Garden huckleberries look, but do not taste, the like either one. I Googled for some recipe ideas, and only way they even approached what we wanted was when I added orange zest and juice. We will not waste a SFG bed for them again. Having said that, the ground cherries (cousin to G.Huckleberies) were very tasty. Hope your experience will be more satisfying. Nonna
