Just wanted to say hello to you all.

My name is Brian and I'm a 24 year old first timer in West Central, FL.

Me and my girlfriend purchased our first home together a few months ago and I've decided it is time to end my reliance on tasteless, overpriced, over-chemicaled produce from the stores. We live a mostly vegetarian lifestyle and try to eat organic as much as possible, but I feel it is time to take the matter into my own hands.

I was given a few tomato seedlings a few months ago and since then I have been aggressively researching edible gardening and planning my beds for fall. I've been driving my girlfriend crazy with seed catalogs and pictures of things she's never seen before like purple carrots, red okra, and lemon cucumbers...so before it is time to start planting, I figured I should find a few forums to expand my knowledge, and seeing as I have chosen to use the square foot gardening/Mel's mix methods, this seemed like as good a place as any.

I look forward to sharing stories, pictures, and tips with all of you and thank you in advance for any help that you may provide!

Cheers,

Brian

Welcome to SFG! I'm pretty much a newbie too! Not only will you start eating organic but what you grow will taste so much better than zombie produce from the market. You'll eventually win your girlfriend over. Congrats on the house, good luck with your garden and post pics once in a while to let everyone know how your doing. People here are so cool and super encouraging!!!

welcome  Brian!  Once your girlfriend tastes your produce she will be hooked.  I don't even like peas, but picking them fresh out of the garden - those pods don't even make it in the house.  They are like eating candy!  My 3 yr old next door neighbor and I stand at my pea trellis and munch.  She even comes over and rings the doorbell to ask if we can eat some peas!

Welcome, Brian!
I am a first timer too... meant to start last year, but never happened. This year we started with a 4x8 bed and plan on a second one of the same size for a fall bed this year... Just want to let you know how helpful everyone is on here! The one word of advice I can give, is if you are trying to fix a problem or don't know what something is or what have you, post a pic. This helps more than a written description. You will most likely get advice from more than one person, which is awesome because everyone is pulling from their own trials and tribulations. I found stuff on here that I didn't even know you could do, like a worm tube, which we are making this weekend. Search around, make some friends and get in touch with your regional host... they know a lot of specifics for your location! Good luck and have lots of fun!
