So I made my first SFG frame out of standard six-inch boards from Menard's, and tried to make the ground as flat as I could. When I put the frame down, there were sizable gaps in a few places between the frame and the ground. Evidently, the ground wasn't as flat and smooth as I thought it was. Since I didn't put a bottom on my SFG, I know eventually, a lot of Mel's mix is going to leak out those gaps.

So what's the best way to smooth out a spot for your SFG? Any advice? Thanks.

When I had that problem I used smallish rocks to plug the gaps under the bottom of the bedside. That worked pretty well.

Depending upon how much gap-filling material you need, Why not try some 1"-2" lumber the width of the bed, beneath the low side?

I recently hit upon the idea of using 2x4s on the outside of my beds to inhibit grass and weed growth.

Well... so far I've only used things with bottoms because I live in the city (decades of residue from leaded gas lies just beneath the surface) and the neighbor used chemicals on her yard for years. I don't really trust the dirt on the ground to grow something that I want to eat later.

My advice for you though ... let your inner child escape and just fill the gaps with mud patties, let it dry out and coat it with linseed oil.
