New to SFG

Good morning, just signed up for this forum, and am looking forward to growing this year. Where is the best place to find how many plants go into each square?

Welcome to the site , we run by the book mentioned in my strap lines , therein is all the info you need to build , fill and sow your square foot gardens with the most commonly eaten crops.

To give you anwers right now , we need to know what you intend to grow as spacings are different, though you can glean most of the info off the seed packet .

If it says plant every three inches , that's your code word . Allow 3 inches between all plants & the edges of the square , similarly if it says thin to two inches then it will be two inches between each pant & the edges of the square .

Mel has a simple way of dividing up the square foot to give you a planting grid .
think of 1, 4, 9 or 16 seed sowing possitions ,it's better explained in the book and in several threads found in the main index

Some of the items I would like to plant. In addition, corn, pole beans, and cantaloupe.

It seems the seed packets say one thing but the SFG concept is of higher density. For example, asparagus in a 4 x 8 bed seems to allow about 10 plants. But SFG posts say 4 per sq ft -- big difference there!

The best answer for any SFG questions is "Read the book."

I would only ever do one aspargus plant per square foot ..right in the middle , they stay there for up to 20 years , so having a separate bed for it is usually the answer

In the book it does indeed indicate 1 or 4 per square foot .
I think that is explained in growing from seed do 4 per square foot , when two years old separate them and plant out at a greater distance
However most people buy three year old ready grown crowns and when spread out you will only be able to fit one in each square foot .

An earlier book 2006 edition by Mel gives two per four one foot squares .
I've just reread page 208 of the latest 2013 book mentioned in my strap line .

Mel has given it as plant four crowns per square foot , saying he found it gave bigger crops quicker .
Now that is interesting indeed .
Could it be that the quality of the MM rather than mother earth soil gives this massive increase in performance or do we have , " A pronters mistook " .
