How level does the ground have to be? Should you check it with a leveling tool? How should it be leveled if it slopes a little?

No it doesn't have to be perfect. Don't overthink it. Just use some common sense and build away. It will be good.

thanks, meat. I tend to over-analyze everything. The slope in one spot is so slight I was going to have to purchase a leveler to figure it out. Very Happy

glad you\'re here to the forum Okoboji Gardner
When I built my beds I dug up the grass under them. Then dug the dirt under them to at least a shovel depth; kinda like double digging a regular garden. It is not "by the book" but I did not think it would hurt esp for deep rooted plants. With the ground soft under the beds it was easy to level the bed frames with a carpenters level. Like meatburner said this ain't rocket science close is just fine. The beauty of this method is how forgiving it is IF you use the mix and water properly.

I went on a box binge last spring and gathered every scrap of 2x4 and 2x6 I could find while hubby stood there and said "It better look good or I am going to redo it" He is a bit of a perfectionist and I am more of a beat it to fit paint it to match kinda girl. I cut and screwed my boxed together, then put weed cloth loosely on the bottom of the boxes so it would give with any unlevelness (think I just made up a new word Razz ) Then I put the boxes where I wanted them and used rocks around the bottom edges to make sure the boxes were level! When hubby got home he was actually impressed but if he had been there to watch he would of been telling me all the wrong things I was doing and telling me the "better" way to do them! Hahaha, jokes on him, what he don't know won't hurt him!

My boxes are on a slight hill. I didn't level them. By the end of the season the MM was higher at the lower end. Laughing So this year I'm starting off with the MM being higher at the higher end. But the plants don't seem to care one way or the other, and water absorbs rather than runs downhill.
