Pruning Tomatoes Empty Pruning Tomatoes

Would someone please explain what Mel means when he suggests that you prune tomatoes to a single stem? I assume that you should snip off succors but how much of the branches growing out from the main stalk should be removed? An illustration of what the tomato should look like when pruned correctly sure would help. Just do not to end up with no toamtoes due to over pruning.
