Im new to Square Foot Gardening this year. I found the book and was sold ! After 3 years of working on my garden on a budget, this seemed like a breath of heaven. I live in Southwest Ms. I am a Mom to 5 and two grands. I love gardening but still a new gardener, its my place to go (therapy, radio and all). Ive planted yellow cherry tomatoes here, creole tomatoes, 3 basil plants, cilantro, bell pepper, parsley, sage, lemon verbena. I was given more than half my plants. I did buy the basil plants and a few others. I have pineapple sage that lived through our winter of snow this year that has to be transplanted as well as the rosemary. I cheated with this boxes soil (ready made with as close to the mels mix as we could get), living where I live it took a minute to find what I wanted in vermiculite. The pool supply store !!! We are starting a worm farm this Sunday as well to have our own worm castings to mix with our chicken "castings" lol. Our neighbor will let us get his horse manure as well. Im looking forward to more sitting time in my garden rather than the weeding and fertilizing. Where the smoke is in this picture will be my sitting area and I will use that pine stump as my table pedestal Smile behind the sitting area I want to make 1x 6 boxes for mint and things like that. Those boxes wont be traditional square foot boxes.. they will be made from the tops of our pines we cut to use for logs for our home, tiny log boxes Smile Looking forward to learning here Smile

Thank you so much for the welcome!! Its just so fun. I was in the garden tonight to water and I was done in minutes !! It takes such a small amount of water compared to the same amount of plants with row planting. I love the extra time I had to just sit there and look at the garden.

Hi Ha-, welcome to the SFG Forums. My First Box 396615

I agree with you that it is so wonderfully relaxing to be in the garden. It used to be that I would see all the things that need done when I went out to the garden. Now it is so different. Last year was my first year with this type of gardening. I tidied up for a few minutes and then just enjoyed.

It's the soil. Once I discovered the recipe my gardening days were pure joy. I put that soil everywhere I could last year and I'm going to do more this year. Now flowers and veggies will grow instead of weeds!

My best to you. Keep posting pictures.

Welcome, and your garden looks great! I am jealous - I want to have worms, but have not yet completely convinced my husband. With the horse manure -which is fabulous stuff! - do make sure it is well aged. Someone here - I don't remember who - ended up with TONS of weeds from horse manure not fully composted. But I'm not trying to scare you away from it.

Hi Martha,
Nice to meet you and thank you !! The worms, lolol. We have 3 sons at home as well as the oldest son and daughter living out of the home. But they like fishing. I want the boys at home to be able to sell the worms (thats the plan) for fishing and I use the castings. ( I dont touch worms by the way ) lololololol I will take a picture of the worm box when they finish building it. I have a pdf some where for a worm far I think I will post that too. Im hoping you can convince your husband too !! We are going to use scrap wood we have for the worm box and the "root veggie box. Thank you for the heads up on the manure. We do have a horse manure source, just not used it yet. I cheated and bought bagged manure from Lowes. I will be mixing that batch today. My arms are trying to fall off now as it is. lolololololol. But the fun of sitting more in my garden is so exciting.
