overwintering trees in pots Empty overwintering trees in pots

Post  nycquilter 10/14/2012, 8:28 am

Hi all, this year, I tried growing new trees (straight from the nursery new) in large pots in my fenced-in area to prevent giving the deer a feast. The trees--a 3-variety Asian pear and two varieties of paw-paw--did excellently. Now, I'm worried about helping them survive over the winter. Should I wrap the pots? It gets pretty cold and I fear what might happen if the soil in the pots freezes.

thanks.

We don't get as cold as you, but I am planning to set out my persimmon and paw paw trees before it gets really cold. I am concerned as well, about their survival in pots.

I'm no expert on the subject; it's just my gut feeling.

Southernism for plant in the ground.

Has anybody thought about planting the pot in a hole lined with leaves or straw to keep the roots from freezing? Or am I not thinking right.

another reason that I SFG is that it is not easy to dig the soil by me. Last time I tried, I struck a boulder. After 1-1/2 hours with shovel and pick-ax, I had barely reached the middle of the boulder! And I want to keep it fenced from the deer who are rampant. If I drive up the driveway in the middle of the night, I often have to wait for deer to move aside.

I am wondering if you get bales of straw, open them up some and made a thick layer around the pots. Another option, if you have a garage, is moving them into the garage. Have you thought of calling a garden center? They may be able to give you some advice. Good luck!

I just covered 25 oak tree starts in 4" pots with fallen leaves about 6" deep. Depending how cold it gets where you are, it should help you to keep them healthy/alive over the winter.
