Fall Garlic planting
Hi everyone, I am a newbie and will be taking my correspondance course soon. I am in the process of planning and constructing my SFG, 300'sqf with (2) 34" H X 2' X 8' and (2) 34" X 2 X2 cedar beds from Gardeners.com. However, while that is doing on I wanted to 'start' a coworkers favorite garlic for him in Mel's Mix and let him harvest in the summer. My question: Do I have to sprout the cloves first? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am in So Ca. Thank you, Robin

Hi Robin to the SFG Forum! No need to presprout the garlic cloves. But being from the northeast I don't know when you should be planting your garlic.
Good luck with the garden and I look forward to chattin' with you!

Re: Fall Garlic planting
An idea for getting two great crops from the same 4x4 plot: If you love garlic: n your new 4x4 plot, plant a couple of different kinds of garlic (like: what you enjoy roasted, what you prefer for canning, "hot" variety for salsas, etc.). In your area, probably in late June, dig your garlics. Amend the squares with compost and plant some beans on the trellis side of the 4x4 square, four squares across in front of the beans with Swiss chard, and the remaining 8 squares in front of the unit in basil, lettuce (from starts), and two pepper plants (on outside edge square). You will notice, all these plants will mature and be ready to pull about the time the first frost threatens. So, already you've used the same 4x4 square to produce two crops. Now comes the fun part, though you will have to have planted and hold ready to put into the 4x4: overwintering broccoli, short season broccoli, at least 2 (and better yet 3) kinds of kale, and overwintering onions. Voila! Three seasons of vegetables from one 4x4 block. Nonna

Good thinking Nonna! Robin, do you have frost in southern Cali? I always thought of it as a warm place, always... but I don't really know.

Robin, just realized I didn't answer your question earlier: "do I have to sprout my garlic first?" No, definitely not, because the garlic clove spends the first months in its dirt producing a viable root system, THEN, when the days begin to lengthen, it sends up leaves. Hope this helps. Nonna

Nonna -
so I wonder if I should be concerned at all with any purposeful routine watering of new planted garlic cloves. It will need some moisture I assume(?) to grow those roots or maybe the cold soil mix alone stimulates growth..so much to learn....the more I know, the more I don't know.

Easy way to tell if soil needs water is to stick your finger in it. Water if it feels totally dry. Remember, not much water is needed in well composted MM, all components soak up water and slowly release it. After fall rains come, no need to add more water, just let nature take its course. After you see shoots next spring, watch for long dry spells. Also, our local top master gardener advocates giving garlic a side dressing of well-composted compost around middle of March (here in Oregon, YMMV), and another late May or early June. Then, again, let nature take its course. (Her course?) Nonna

Fall Garlic planting
Nonna and Camprn,
Thank you for the quick and wonderful responses. I planted my garlic last night and placed them in a sunny spot. So. Calif. can very well get frost. The orange groves and othe citrus crops don't like it but it can happen. I made my first batch of MM for this garlic planting and after watering it I was impressed with the water retention properties. And just like Mel says it is like a sponge that will drain once it is perfectly filled. Look forward to hearing from all of you. Robin

Re: Fall Garlic planting
Southern CA has been in the 90 and 100s for the last month and there isn't any relief in next 10 days forcast. So if my cloves want warm soil to germinate, they have the cosiest...my goodness.
