I planted Golden Waxed beans, Green Beans & Peas about 2 weeks ago. 1 of 9 waxed beans came up and was promptly eaten; nothing but stem left. 4 of 9 Bush Beans came up and have developed 2 sets of leaves. 3 of 4 peas came up. Should I wait awhile longer or should I go ahead and re-seed. Also, the Cauliflower has not come up yet. Everything else I planted has come up except for elephant garlic.

I'd definitely reseed. Plus, I'd put collars around the emerging seedlings 'cause it sounds like you may have cutworms emerging at night to slice off your seedling stems. One idea for collars is toilet paper rolls, cut in two. Personally, I use the plastic K-cup from our morning coffee. Just use scissors to cut around the top of the K-cup, empty the grounds into your compost bucket, pull out the filter, then cut around the bottom and use the resulting topless/bottomless circle to put around your seedling. Works for me. Nonna

Thanks a bunch. I don't have Kcups but I do have plastic drinking cups. I can use those.

The little one- or two-sip bathroom dispenser cups are great for cutworm barriers, too. Just cut the bottoms out. Regular sized cups are a bit too big and might let the worm come up, circle the seedling stem and munch away. I've heard other folks use soda straws, cut into 3" pieces and two of the pieces put into the dird on either side of the seedling. Again, it keeps the worm from wrapping itself around the stem as it feeds.

Cut worms are not necessarily what might cause the seed to not sprout. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question about how long to wait before reseeding. I vary rarely have that problem. I always plant two seeds in each hole. Almost always, at least one sprouts. If two sprout, I wait a while and cut one seedling and let the most vigorous seedling continue to grow.

Somebody on the forum uses toothpicks on each side of the stem for the cutworms. As to reseeding, check the germination time on the seed pack and allow an extra week is the estimate I use. Although I had some hot pepper seeds that decided to sprout a month after I gave up on them. Had other seeds in sprouting bin so they kept wet.

Birds will also snap the heads off new seedlings leaving just a stem and little worms can eat an entire seedling's leaves off in a single night. Because there is no more greenery for them to eat, you never see what it was. A covering of light weight row cover or tulle until the seedling becomes a real plant can help with this. Somebody else will have to answer if BT can be used on emerging seedlings for worm control.

Kay
