Males Only!

I have been anxiously awaiting some signs of fruit on my yellow squash and have yet to see a female flower. Is there something wrong or do I just need to wait? Also, do cucumbers and cantaloupe have male & female flowers? Right now they all look the same to me. Also, is heat a factor? We have had temps in the 100's. Yesterday it was 109!

Like robins in the spring, first come the males and then the females follow when assured it is time.

Yup all of those plants have male and females.
Usually the male flowers come first and then the female, eventually lots of both of them.
Same thing happened to me this year, except all I had were female flowers.
Just wait a few weeks and you will likely have lots of both.

I also find that these plants need extra fertilizing, so have been putting a bit of extra compost around them (they are very busy and need extra food )

OH and it might be too hot right now, I know for beans AND peppers, they stop producing flowers above a certain temperature, HOWEVER when the temps drop they resume...

Does this apply to cucumbers as well? They were doing fine, then stopped and hopefully will start producing again

I tried "armenian cucumber" last two years and had lots of flowers but never a single fruit. From what I understand this type of cucumber is actually a gourd. I looked for female flowers but they all looked the same. I just pulled the plants this week and will put that area to better use.
Now, my zuchinni and winter squash plants have been producing male flowers at about a 10 to 1 ratio to female flowers, until this week when I noticed suddenly almost the exact opposite. For bird, I understand the purpose of having the males show up first (males can set up territory and some will even build nests to help attract a mate) - only reason I can guess for this design in plants in that the early male flowers attract the pollinators so they are around when the female flowers start coming up. I did notice there were few bees around until just recently, now there are always a few in the flowers when they are open .That is a huge relief, since most of the early female flowers went unpollinated

I've never seen cucumbers produce anything when the temps are triple digit. And the plants can get screwed up by the extreme. I've seen all male flower, and all female flowers at times. Of course, either will stop production.
And heat will kill pollen, even if it's not quite so extreme, and even if there are both sexes. It's highly important in hot weather to get plenty of bee action early in the morning when the flowers and the pollen are viable. Poorly pollinated cukes are curled or knotty.
