Thanks for the tip. I'll check Tractor Supply tomorrow. I was just in there yesterday and didn't see it, but I wasn't specifically looking for that, so I could have just overlooked. Otherwise, the nearest Home Depot has 4 bags in stock, though that's still over an hour of driving to get it.

Putting in a little extra footwork now to obtain all the proper ingredients for Mel's Mix, will save you time and money later

My local Tractor Supply has a lousy selection of composts.

Vermiculite
My local farm supply store will order vermiculite for me. I've ordered two 4 cu. ft. bags.
Find out where local farmers in your area, specifically crop farmers, buy their supplies.

Re: Where to get Mel's Mix
I am new to gardening also and need some help. I bought the book today. I have 40 lbs. of chickity doo doo due to arrive on Thursday. I am picking up local aged cow manure tomorrow morning. I have 10 bags of mels mix ordered, it will hopefully be here next week. I have 32 concrete blocks that I will use to make the bed. I have 1 bag of course vermiculite (4cf) and 1 bag peat moss (3 cf). I can buy horse manure locally. I also found mushroom compost but the bag doesn't specify quantities, of each ingredient so I don't know whether to buy it. So I have 2 of the 5 types of compost, but can get the horse and mushroom local. I was going to do 1 4x8x10 bed with the blocks two high but I'm considering two 4x4 beds. I have two heirloom tomato transplants and one cherry tomato hybrid plant, and a heirloom pepper transplant so far. I also have some heirloom pole beans. I have some planning to do! Can I mix mels mix with my mix? Do I have enough peat moss and vermiculate? I have already spent so much on this.

I mean can I put the 10 bags of the sfg potting mix I ordered next to the MM I am putting together next to each other in the bed?

You have homemade and storebought MM, you can use them in separate beds, you can mix together, you can use them at separate ends of the same bed.

Sorry Rooster. I was rambling I guess. Lol this is overwhelming to me. Thanks etnredclay, I don't think I bought enough sfg soil from HD. I just picked up 100 lbs of composted cow manure. I saw the raised beds at the extension agency and I was encouraged! They have beautiful veggies in their sfg's. they also are doing lasagna gardens and even growing potatoes in straw bales. They also have asparagus that an agent was picking while I was there.

Re: Where to get Mel's Mix
Sfg mix will be here on the 23rd. I don't have all my ingredients yet and I'm wondering if its too late to put out my tomato transplants. I have one bag of happy frog soil, that doesn't count in mels mix does it?
