I forget who it was but Thanks to the person that shared washing veggies in a sinkful of water with a capful or two of bleach. I've scaled that way down for my current small spinach pickings. There is no chlorine flavor and boy I feel soo much better taking away the was this washed enough? thoughts in my head.

Yep, it was me and I give credit to the health units at the various US Embassies where I've been. Spent time and ate produce in the following countries using the method without health problems from veggies or fruit I prepared. Liberia, Libya, Burkina Faso, Bosnia Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Albania, Turkmenistan, Brazil, Philippines, Taiwan and China. Most are 3rd world or emerging and health issues are present. Until the TSA put in the liquid restrictions, I always carried a large medicine bottle of Clorox in my suitcase to treat fresh fruits in the hotel sink. (I would get tired of resturant food and liked fresh fruit for snacks) Oh, shampoo provided by the hotel makes a good wash as well. Rinsed with hotel water and then rinsed with bottled water. A poster in medical unit of one embassy said, If you can't peel it or cook it don't eat it. That's how seriously the Embassy took the issue.

As an add on, a bath in vinegar water following the bleach water will remove the bleach odor and also has a germicidial effect. And soaking broccoli heads causes any creepy crawlies to get out.

Thanks a bunch Rooster and Kay's US Embassies experiences. Appreciate the vinegar tip too. I knew vinegar had a germicidal effect but would never have thought to use it either. Kay you have really seen the world, whew.

in the philippines, we washed everything with salt water, including kitchen counters. daddy told me that during the war, they even used hot salt water to clean and sanitize surfaces and equipment at the hospital. when i asked him what the "recipe" is for the salt water, he said "too salty to drink".

I once had a doctor tell me to use a heaping tablespoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle with it. He said it has an antibiotic effect.

Rowena, what part of PI is your family from. I have a house in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. All my daughters in law are Filipina and a family member is acting as caretaker in return for college tuition.

we are from manila (quezon city and caloocan). you or your DILs might be familiar with my family, my grandfather was teodoro gonzales. my grandmother is from the soriano sugar cane family.

I mean this as a complement, not a racist statement: all the Filipinas I've known are so compassionate and such wonderful caregivers. I wish there were more Filipina nurses/health care providers here in Indiana!!

as an add on coment for food prep. I got this tip in e-mail have tried it and it works. Make a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 9 parts water in a container run your strawberries and other fruit/berries though to kill the mold. This mix does not change the flavor a bit. I have some strawberries from earlier in the week and no sign of mold.

That's good to know pepper, I am still buying from the supermarket until my strawberries mature. I will try your advice. Thanks!

That is is very useful tip; when I was growing up and had a sore throat my Mom would have my gargle with hot salt water. It not only has an antibacterial effect but is surprisingly soothing as well. Tastes nasty though.

After 2 wisdom teeth were removed a couple years ago the surgeon's instructions were to swish salt water several times a day. Excellent for cleansing and healing.

I will say this, Filipinas are very family oriented and when my nurse found out I had a Filipina DIL, I got extra visits. They are from the Olongapo area. My son was stationed in Subic Bay for 5 years.

Someone put this tip on Pinterest. I tried it also, it really does work!

Herblover & llama momma - both of those are definite old fashioned remedies. I know that they work from when I was a kid - MANY MANY MOONS AGO!

So happy that I didn't offend you, rowena___. Caregiving is sorely undervalued in our society. We struggle to find caregivers with a lick of common sense and any kind of work ethic. (btw, I'm also a homeschooling mom...gardening is part of our school curriculum!).
