newbie asparagus question
Hi!
In the new book, it says to plant asparagus on top of 3 inches of MM and then add the rest to reach 6 inches. In traditional gardening you are supposed to dig a foot down and then keep adding dirt as the plants grow until you get to the surface area.
My question is: do I really only need a regular 6 inch bed? Not a higher one like for potatoes?

Re: newbie asparagus question
I planted my asparagus last fall in three inches of MM. This spring, I've adding another three inches to the plants. The thing is, the bottom of my box rests on the ground (which I lined with newspaper to kill out the grass), so I think if the roots want to go deeper, they can, which I think they will.
Here is a link to a good explanation of how asparagus grows

It may also depend on the variety. I planted Jersey, which only needs to be planted 6 inches deep.
I think if you want your asparagus to last 20 years, you will need to plant it on top of the ground, but that is just my humble opinion.
