Garden Sprinklers Empty Garden Sprinklers

Post  kbb964 4/4/2012, 10:05 am

So I have a slight problem. I have a few sprinkler heads that if turned on would not be good for my raised beds. I am in a quandary as to what to do. Leave zone 2 off completely ( this would stop part of my front lawn from being watered). Cap off the offending heads? or maybe something else I have not thought of ?
Any suggestions most welcome peeps!

There is usually a way to turn off each individual head without having to cap the heads. I suggest you try to figure out how to shut of the head incase you ever need that head again.

The head could be capped as mentioned. Lawn heads usually have adjustments for distance and arc. Would that help??

Would moving the head a few feet one way or another help? It's easy enough to do if the system isn't too deep.

hmm, I have one head that is a foot away that would need capping. If i leave it then boxes would be water in the cold of night, not good. the other is maybe 6 foot away, might get away with that and adjust it. then I have another zone that has a head which shoots water that way big style, that I can probably adjust the pattern. Like i said i cant find the one that is closest to the beds. I cant sort anything out till they turn on in a few weeks.

I will take out my handy dandy sprinkler book that the old dude that installed made me.

They also have heads that spray in a rectangle as opposed to an arc. Ask the people at your local big box store, they will be more than helpful.

Yeah, you'll probably find the same line in the store as what is being used. They are pretty simple. Unscrew the sprayer. You might need a wrench.

I'd cap it. If you have room, I install a shorter stem so it is under ground, capped of course.

Then you don't have any problems with stepping on them!

I shall cap the offending sprinkler head, right now I cant for the life in me find it! I will find it in a few weeks when we turn them on. I will have to go back to the head previous to that one and cap it there. I can kill two birds with one stone as that one needed fixing anyway.
Thanks all

Might even be able to simply change the head.

I don't have an in ground sprinkler system, but I do have some drip irrigation, and I've noticed there are tons of different types of sprinkler heads for in ground sprinklers (they even make adapters that allow you to hook drip lines up to in ground sprinklers).

They have kits that let you connect drip irrigation sets to sprinkler connections.
This is what i'm thinking of changing my Watering grid to with 1/4" soaker tubes.

Thanks Hoggar, I am researching this system. With a drip system attached to the offending popup spray head this would give me max ( 8 drip heads) the conversion kit comes with only 6 but i could buy the separate 8 head. I am thinking that i would prefer a soaker line rather than individual drip heads but i cannot find any info how to attach soakers to my rain bird system. hmmm

Hi Kay.

Orbit Irrigation makes several different configurations of manifolds from 1 to 8
outlets and they make soaker tubing in 1/4" diameter to fit the drip system.
Just dig around there web site a bit they also have a good support section.

I like Orbit mostly because I'm 3 miles from there distribution warehouse and
I can buy direct. Very Happy But I can also say I have been happy with the supplies Ive
purchased from them

I went to Ace Hardware today ( had coupons) bought a post hole digger, bolt for the gate, tubs for Mel's Mix, rabbit repellant and some bits and bobs. Got 20 bucks off!

But then I checked out the sprinkler section. I had looked at what i would need to buy separately for the drip system and there it was .......... A ready made conversion kit with the pressure thing, converter for sprinkler head, tubing, cutter and stakes. I am going back tomorrow to use my other coupon. 37 bucks and 10 bucks coupon!
