Onion space
This is my first year of SFG (thus no grids yet) and I chose that method because it looked like it would make sense.I already had built some 4x8 raised beds, so the rest was simple. Now I'm a little worried about the spacing. Following the instructions on page 215 for onions, I placed 16 bulbs in a 12"x12" square. They are now beginning to sprout and now I worry is there is going to be enough space for anything larger than ping pong sized onions? Do I need to worry or thin some of these out. BTW, they are red onions, but my white onions are the same.

Re: Onion space
If you think it is going to be a problem, then when they get ping pong ball size just pull a few for dinner.

Re: Onion space
I thought the same thing last year when i first started. They aren't huge but they do get bigger then ping pong ball sized. I planted 9 per square this year to see if there was going to be a big difference.
One thing you can do is harvest every other onion leaving the rest to grow bigger with the extra space.
Good luck this year!

Re: Onion space
Great suggestions. I think watching close and pulling every other one might be worth trying. Since this is my first year I'm making a lot of notes in order to make adjustments as the year's progress. I hope I can do some winter stuff this year also.
