Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
This is a fun thread... all wondering what the mystery bulb is going to be. I thought it might be a lily, too, before it started to open up, but now that we can see the inside, it doesn't look lily-ish...

Well I know that there are some lilies in the bunch that came from my mothers garden.

There are hardy varieties of amarylis that that can be grown in zones 3-9.
For example this variety from the Brecks catalog.
http://brecks.com/product.asp?pn=73695
Usually you would still have to bring them indoors during the fall in order for them to survive in your zone but its not unheard of for them to survive without being brought in.

It is starting to look like a weed, there are all these little yellow things inside and I am afraid they might be seeds.......

mystery bulb plus a few more
OK so this is what she looks like this week. Perhaps a bit worse for the wear from the frost, but clearly looks like one of these days SOMETHING is going to emerge....... I think that this one is columbine
and that this one is hollyhock

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
Amaryllis. My parents were gifted some for christmas one year. Just the bulb alone it could have been Amaryllis or Calla lily. But the way it's blossoming, I'd say it's Amaryllis. Or Daffodils. o.O

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
Is it still sitting on/near the ground? Is there any leaves? It may be a flower that only grows in a colder climate. It may be a surprise something, with leaves growing later on. Doesn't look like an amaryllis flower now, but...

yup pretty much sitting on the ground, there are about 4 of them and they are all perking up now and something is going to happen.

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
My vote: definitely not daffodil, leaves are wrong. If amaryllis, it's gotta be rare, doesn't have the large flowers usually associated with the breed. Interesting mystery!

GWN, might be profitable to contact the Pacific Bulb Society (http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Brunsvigia ). Someone there may be able to give you a species name for your Audrey II. What an exciting garden item!

What a great site, ultimately I will likely do that, but in the meantime I am having too much fun just watching all the changes and imagining what it might be.

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
The plant now seems to be taking off.... growing away from the ground and filling in with leaves as it goes.
They are becoming quite spectacular in that they are the only thin worthy of mention yet in the perennial garden, neighbours comment...

What does it look like now?
It is definitely not an amarylis...at least not the kind we had! Or a daffodil, or a calla lily.
It's a ____?

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
You are right, they do look like space stations!
Rooster may be right. Check this...but the leaves are different (maybe because of the size?). Good news: monarch butterflies love them!
