mystery bulb in garden ??
I inherited many bulbs last year from my mother, but she was unable to tell me anything about them and so I am wondering if this is something that anyone recognizes

bulb identity
That looks remarkably like an amarillis bulb coming up. How big is this bulb?

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
I guess about an inch across and about 3 inches high.
I am just wanting to know it is not a weed.
Hoping to catch them early.

I do not think it could be an amaryllis, even though, it does look a bit like one in the picture.
I would say a little smaller.

Well you will be able to ID it soon as it is getting ready to blossom. No worries about it self seeding if you pick the flower, it wont go to seed. Would you take a photo when it blooms and let us know?GWN wrote:I guess about an inch across and about 3 inches high. I am just wanting to know it is not a weed. Hoping to catch them early.

How fun! Mystery flowers!
I have no idea since I've never grown Amaryllis, but the stock photo I looked at looks similar:
Yours looks very healthy and happy to be there!

This photo gives a bit more info, no real change overall, but the little sproutlings off the side....
I have a picture of another similar one near it, but I cannot seem to post it, it just keeps putting up the same photo, so I will post it in a separate post

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
Well the flowers disappeared by the next morning...... the dear deer.
But I thought I would update the pictures.
The plant in question has not changed at all, however one very close to it that i put a glass cloche over is growing.
So the bottom picture is the one that looked just like the mystery one before I put the cloche on it to encourage it to bloom.
Does it still look like an amaryllis?

These could be freesia. They are awful close to the ground though. What do you think?

Another plotter suggested my unknown plants are squash. Will have to wait for secondary leaves.

The green leaves in the picture look like amaryallis leaves, that usually come up before the bloom. Also, the bloom comes up on a stalk above the leaves.GWN wrote:Well the flowers disappeared by the next morning...... the dear deer.

The bulb looks like an amaryilis, but, it may be some flower that just your Mom may know what it is. What is that in the center that looks something like cabbage texture? Your flowers may do different in the cold, never hot area. I'll try to get a pic of an amaryallis tommorow. Very interesting!

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
But up here in Canada amaryllis is just something that people get at christmas time to grow indoors.
It does not grow outdoors in our climate, I guess that is why I am sure it cannot be amaryllis, even though I really wish it was.
The other thing is that I am gardening zone 5, but my mother was in zone 3 much further north than here.
However I will keep up with the photos, and if it is amaryllis I will be THRILLEd thanks.....

I'm hoping for amaryllis for you! I thought the yellow flowers looked like crocus. I didn't say anything because I don't have lots of experience with crocus. Come on amaryllis, you can do it! lol

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
GWN,
You have got me to thinking about this, I love flowers, and when/.if it blooms we will know for sure, but in the meantime, I have a notion it is a surprise lily. You may have it not buried deep enough. They are sometimes called a 'hardy amaryillis' Depends on the variety, and when it was planted, what it does next. All will bloom, and all will put on leaves, but not at the same time or season. Some of mine bloom in eary spring, then leaves appear in late summer. Some put up leaves in the spring, which die down and you will think, oh well no flower, then in late summer the bloom will come up. The leaves off to the side may be a pretty red flower in the summer. The spring bloomers of mine are pink and resemble a very tall amarylis.
Hope the deer don't eat them all!

Re: mystery bulb in garden ??
So I put the bulb under a cloche for a week and it really does encourage growth, it is starting to.....??? bloom
This was done with a zoom, but I can see for it to show up here I will need to use macro, but it appears to be multiple globules of tiny white flowers (or somethings)
any takers now??
Once it warms up today I will get a better close up, it looked much bigger on my screen
