I have several veggies I would like to plant that are not listed in Mel's list of plants. How do I determine how many to plant per SF? Also, I keep thinking how big some of the pea plants get and I don't see how you can possibly fit 8 in one square without them crowding each other out. Would someone please explain it to me?

Thanks,

Lee Anne

Planting is determined by the "thin to" instructions on the package (see p. 109 in the ANSFG book).

Thin to 12" = 1 per square
Thin to 6" = 4 per square
Thin to 4" = 9 per square
Thin to 3" = 16 per square

If you grow the peas vertically they should be ok. It's hard to see from the photo below, but I tie four 6' bamboo poles together at the top and put one each in a corner of a square. A couple inches from each corner I plant 1 pea (or pole bean) on each side of a bamboo pole and run two plants up each of the poles. They've always been just fine.
