I received my bare root strawberries today, but I've never grown them before. So I have questions. I opened the plastic bags to allow air to the plants because the plants I bought from Wally World 2 weeks ago were all moldy in the middle.

FYI the local farmers have green growing plants in their beds and average last frost date is Mar 50 and I have a bed ready.

Can I plant now?

Do roots need to be soaked before planting? If so how long?

How many per square?

Kay

Ah Ha, found some planting instructions buried under some packing material. A small paragraph in a 12 page guide. It gives the spacing as 15-24 inches. Can we do better than than in a SFG?

I have June bearing Sparkle and Everbearing Ft Laramie from Garden's Alive.

Kay

Strawberries don't care about the frost! Get them in the ground. Mine are blooming, of course my March is June in most of the country.

Only thing I can say, don't plant too deep. Just plant the roots, have the plant on top just touching the mm. Also, be sure to mark them. Mine are all mixed up due to DH moving them. I believe the ones that are blooming now are June bearing, the everbearing bloom a little later?, maybe.

I've got the SFG book right here in front of me so I'll look up the spacing for you: Four per square foot.

Also, an important tip from the book--make sure that you cut off the runners whenever you see your plants making them so that your plants put their energy into making fruit and not new plants. We didn't know to do this when we tried strawberries and the plants took over but didn't produce much.
