Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
Here are some typical/average upcoming seed starting times for my region along the Colorado front range. It's really time to get your plans finalized and seeds purchased or ordered. Most of my local nursery/garden centers have their best seed selection right now.
Most of these dates are for my local area. I am basing my dates on an average last freeze of May 8th. That comes with a 50% probability rate. This is a vast region, with many micro climates. Some of your frost dates may vary by as much as a month.
This is not a complete list by any means. Just some of the more popular veggies and ones I typically plant.
Some folks start lettuces indoors around Feb. 20th and move out to cold frames by April 1st. I will direct sow some of mine outdoors starting March 27th and continue to stagger plant thru most of May.
Beans: Start seed in ground May 8-22
Beets: Start seed in ground April 17 - May 29
Broccoli: Start seed indoors Mar 13-27. Start seed in ground April 17-24
Brussel sprouts: Start seed indoors March 13-27
Cabbage: Start seed indoors March 13-27. Start seed in ground May 1-15
Carrots: Start seed in ground April 3-17
Cauliflower: Start seed indoors March 13-27. Start seed in ground May 1-15
Celery: Start seed indoors March 13-27
Corn: Start seed in ground May 22-29
Cucumbers: Start seed indoors April 10-24. Start seed in ground May 15-22
Melons: Start seed indoors April 10-24. Start seed outdoors May 22-29 (direct sow outdoors preferred)
Onion sets: Sow in ground April 10-17
Parsnips: Start seed in ground April 17-May 8
Peas: Start seed in ground March 27-April 10
Peppers: Start seed indoors March 13-27.
Potatoes/tubers: Sow in ground May 8-22
Pumpkins: Start seed indoors April 10-24. Start seed in ground May 15-22
Radishes: Start seed in ground April 17 - May 15
Spinach: Start seed in ground March 27 - April 10
Tomatoes: Start seed indoors March 13-27
YMMV

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
Western Mountains and High Plains Region, I've been out and a bout to a couple of garden centers already recently. Seeds are showing up! I've learned to get there early as it seems the good ones go quick!
It's time to really start finalizing your garden plans and getting your seed starting supplies ready. Above are some seed and planting times for the region.
Hope your watching the spring countdown clock on the index page. Times a tickin

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
I got my order into Territorial. Fisher's is still sorting seeds but soon now. I was just thinking I should drop into the local nursery to see what their experience is with asparagus and what varieties they will be carrying. I suspect they might be willing to go in with me on an order of Millenium
I could start onion seed now, but too early for anything else.

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
Not a seed but it is Garlic planting in time in our regions!
Here is a good pdf I found from my ag college. Growing Garlic in Montana
As an aside. it explains something I experienced when I first moved here 20 years ago. Fall planted garlic did not survive here then, I had to plant it at the first thaw in the spring.

Time to bump this up into people's attention. It is almost seed starting time. Time for onions from seed. I am contemplating starting peppers soon so they are big and I can pinch the tips back this season.

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
As you can see from the temp. below it is like spring today. I will be spending today and tomorrow refilling boxes and recharging others. Will be installing three new trellis nets and hopefully have most everything ready for the real spring. One bad thing though is all the bees out looking for non existent flowers. Sure could use some of that snow on the east coast.

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
I just realized I have not put in my seed order.
It is time to get serious and get that garden plan and ordering seeds. I don't start onions from seed any more, but now is the time.

Re: Western Mount/High Plains: Seed Planting Dates
Time to start thinking about seeds and when to start them.
https://www.johnnyseeds.com/growers-library/seed-planting-schedule-calculator.html
This seed planting calculator at Johhnys looks pretty accurate. You need to know your average last frost date. Mine is June 3rd. But I complicate it by growing some things all summer long in a greenhouse so I start those things earlier.
