greetings from the Netherlands

Hi ! I am Evelien and about a week ago I started a SFG. I know that fall is not the best time to do so, but I wanted to give this concept a try before frost and winter strike...
I didnt think much of it, but now, after one week, radishes, spinach and rucola are already coming up..amazing!
I planted some cabbages and broccoli too. They also seem to prosper.

Years ago, when my family was still big, I had a plot of 300m2 for growing vegetables and feed everybody at home. It was a lot of work though.
Now that I am on my own ( my husband died and my kids have 'flown out') I want to take it easy, but I still enjoy growing vegetables just for myself. SFG seems to be the perfect thing for me!!

So glad to have you join us. This is a great group of people who enjoy discussing our SFGs and the joys and problems that happen.

You will find that SFg is much simpler and easier to do than your prior 300m2 and you will be surprised at the amount of veggies you can harvest from such a small area.

Fall is a great time to begin a garden, as long as you are able to put your plants in with enough time to mature before the first frost for tender veggies and give enough time for them to grow for frost hardy veggies.

Best of luck with your broccoli and cabbage. I love them. Glad your spinach, radishes and rucola (is that what we call arugula?) are coming up.

Keep us posted on your progress. And again, Welcome!

Thanks for the warm and friendly welcome! The garden now has all its little squares filled up with seedlings and sowings.
I also had the first problem: yesterday morning I discovered that slugs had been feasting on my young lettuce.. Not much was left of it.
In my cellar I found a glass bucket (actually a champaign cooler, not much in use lately..). In the evening I placed it over the lettuce and this morning...presto! No more slug traces. Problem solved.

By the way: I also sowed japanese winter onions, tat soi ( a chinese leaf lettuce) and a dutch winter lettuce, simply called ' field lettuce' in dutch.

The rest of the garden does great! I almost can see things grow. which is not strange with the warm and humid weather we are having these days.

Evelien, Glad you got rid of those pesky slugs I hope they stay away. You can extend your season a number of ways. I'm pleased you are gardening again and you will find SFG is by far an easier way to go. Keep us posted.
