Hey all my wise garden savvy friends I have a major problem with earwigs. They are my enemy once again this year (along with the evil squash vine borer). The earwigs are basically nestled in the ears of corn. I am not sure if spraying with sevin would be to aggressive (I wanted to stay natural but so far that hasn't worked). I have dusted regularly with diatemaceous earth but I really think I hear bugs laughing at me. I checked on my zucchini 2 days ago to find they had been infiltrated by borer and now I need to replant. I am getting quite discouraged. I mean seriously the guy at my local nursery told me squash vine borers are rare around our area and I get them 2 years in a row 8 plants this year and I forget how many last year. Any thoughts would be appreciated as I head to the nursery in hope of some squash starts and tin foil.

Sorry you have been dealing with borers. I dealt with them the first time last week w/ my first garden. During that time I read that they will live in the soil over winter and emerge as adults in the spring. So that may be why you have them 2 years in a row?

Last year was my first year with anything other than tomatoes in pots. I made my two 4x12' beds with mel's mix. I live in the city I have had more freaky bugs in my garden than most country folks. I have done the reading on how to try and keep SVB from attacking plants but so far it hasn't worked. I put the tin foil up the stem and dusted but that failed. So back to the drawing board.

Here are two other threads I posted earwig trap information and a follow up in. A few did not have good luck doing this. Last year 8 traps just around my house caught well over 10k of them and so far this year 12 traps including 4 in my two 4x12 SFG have eliminated over 4000 of them. The improved bait formula seems much better than just cooking oil. Look for my entries in these threads for the trap and bait info plus more ideas gleaned from other sources. This method has me sold for earwig elimination. So far this year none have come inside my house. Last year they were very upsetting inside and out now sightings are rare even outside. This season leaf damage has become minimal using these traps Plus a little dish soap spray.

I don’t have borer problems so can’t help you there but someone posted about mixing cayenne pepper in very hot water then a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle. After shake mixing very well and cooling it was sprayed on asparagus to rid some beetles and worked very well. Not sure that is good for your borer situation but possibly worth tracking down for consideration.
