DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN......
DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN......
I remember when growing up my grandfather and grandmother had row gardens the size of their backyard (they had 9 children) and it was not a farm. Whenever I visited them, my grandmother was always in the kitchen and my grandfather was always in his garden. He spent hours and hours, days and days, weeks and weeks, months and months in his garden...of course feeding 9 children you needed alot of food. His garden was always lush, green and beautiful...I was truly envious.
We would all help them cook tomatoes for sauce and can them and canned every vegetable they grew. We always ate homemade pasta or pizza every Sunday with them along with my many cousins until my grandmother passed on. (I was 12).
After my grandmother died, he continued his gardening but on a smaller plot. When he sold his house and moved to live with one of his children, he always had a garden.
The point is, if he was alive today I wonder what he would think of my SFG garden. I can only hope he is proud of me. Maybe even he would be envious of little time I spent in my garden.
Loving my garden. Thanks you grandpop.

Re: DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN......
I'm sure he would be very proud of you. I also have fond memories of my grandmother and her garden. It's a shame that I didn't spend more time out there with her. I do recall that she did raised bed gardening instead of row gardening. She also had great sucees with her gardens.
I would also be curious what she would think of SFG.

Re: DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN......
I remember spending time with my great-grandmother, she told stories of when she was a girl, nothing I can actually put down on paper, but now and then those memories come back, like her telling me they plucked the chickens to stuff a matress for a feather bed.
Also my mom's mom never planted potaoes, but had them every year, she just threw out her skins and when the time was right, those eyes would sprout.

Re: DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN......
My grandparents were on the "other" side of farming. Grandpa would buy 20 Highland calves each year, raise them for meat and milk, and sell them for processing. They'd keep one for the freezer to feed them for the year, make cheese and butter and sell any extra milk they didn't use. Grandma always had a small kitchen garden and whatever trees were on the property wherever they lived: apples in Washington, avocados in California, cherries in Oregon. She didn't like gardening and spent as little time as possible in the dirt as she could before returning to her stitching and tatting. But there was always good food on the table. (And she always made sure to have a box of chocolate Pop Tarts for me when I visited.)

I wish I had someone teach me about gardening. My mom talks about how her mother always had a big garden while she was growing up but they lived several hours away from us. My Dad's mother well I don't think she ever got her hands dirty .
