I picked my first leaves this morning to make the basis of a salad.

Two leaves each from several plants.

I know I can eat raw lettuce leaves and chard, but can kale be added or does that have to be cooked?

It sure can be added. Taste it and see what you think before you commit. Sometimes I Julian (sp?) it before I add it to the salad. If you want to skip that step use only the tiny inner leaves. Kale will taste much more like people food after it has gone through a hard frost in Fall. Not all kale is created equally. Some are better raw, some need to be sautéed with a healthy dose of garlic and olive oil.

Oh, wow, I just saw you were from BC. You have salad!?! I am envious. This time last year I was giving away big bags of mixed greens. This year there is more cheer-leading than eating.

Deborah....in Washington (you probably know about the state)....hi neighbor!

Hi Deborah from Washington State.

Yes, I know about the state, having been through several times and until I lost my DH we would go to Spokane quite often, much nearer than our Vancouver.

I must admit that the leaves I picked this morning were from transplants so I did have a head start.

I had hoped to add radishes but I think it will be a week or so before I can harvest any. Otherwise everything is way behind but now we have a couple of days sunshine and that will make a difference then I expect I will be having salad everday and also sharing.

Anyway, thanks for the info about kale. I assume the kale plants will stay put until the fall? I did know that things like brussel sprouts are much better for having a frost.

My square of greens has been harvested many times also. I'm just way behind on the lettuce. Sorry to hear about your DH. I would be so lost without mine. At least for a season or three. So many who live back east think I am from DC if I say I'm in Washington.

LavenderD, your remark about Easterners mistaking Washington for the DC area, tickled me. When my sister was living in the East and working as a stewardess for a now-defunct airline, an East Coast passenger learned she was from the Northwest and asked her if we still had trouble with the Indians. My sister was dumbstruck, but managed to mumble something about drawing our automobiles into a circle at night to discourage attacks.

Ha! Nonna, my husband got that question when he was in Alabama on Business. Ignoring the whole fishing issue, he didn't even blink when he said, no, we worry more about the A's (as in Oakland...at the time) than the Indians. (Speaking of Mariners baseball)

Giggles! I went down to Cali to visit friends when I was in college. One of their roommates was asking me what it was like in Washington. She kept leading with how farm like it must be and not a lot of towns/people. I went to WSU so I was getting my fill of ag jokes and cow tipping humor. I told her all about the farms and how you can drive all day and not see anyone. Then I started talking about the roaming cows in the middle of the streets and explained how we had to slow down and just gently push them off the road to get through. My friends joined in and nicely filled in the story..... She was pretty mad when she realized I was making fun of her... ooops. :o)
