I live in PA near Wilmington, DE and wondered who carries cedar or redwood planks the size I need? (2x6 or 2x8)
Looking to install 4 raised beds and this is my 1st time trying this method.

I'm not in your area, but saw the post in the sidebar. I got cedar planks from the Blue Box Store. They even cut it in 4' lengths for me. My car still smells wonderful.

any lumber yard should have them in various sizes. Lowes/Home Depot, etc. It's pretty normal stuff.

I think the big box stores (HD, Lowes) will have the lumber you need. On another topic, if you need the compost or vermiculite to make Mel's Mix, I found out in another thread you can get it at Score Seed, Philadelphia Pike & Harvey in Claymont, DE. I haven't been there yet but I called and spoke with someone there and it sounds like a great place.

where to find cedar/redwood planks? Empty source for boards

Post  Nonna.PapaVino 4/24/2011, 11:56 am

A close-by Home Depot (Beaverton, OR) has 5/8" x 5-1/2" x 6" western red cedar fencing boards for $.97 each. Kinda thin, though. Would they be useful for smaller 4 foot beds?

Saw this is your first post and wanted to say where to find cedar/redwood planks? 396615 where to find cedar/redwood planks? 396615 . Thank you for joining the forum. I am from Canada, over on the Pacific side in British Columbia so not a lot of help to you in terms of locations for your cedar. We have lots of it here. Smile However, several people have suggested big box stores and that would be my first try. If not there, try other lumber yards. I would use the phone book first and do some calling to check prices, availability, etc. Sometimes the smaller places have a better selection.....at least if the Home Depot we have here is any indication of what they are all like.

Best of luck in your search and in your beginning SFG. Feel free to jump in with questions and comments. Post pics if you want. It is always nice to see what others are doing.

Nice to have you join us.

As reported by several members, Home Depot or Lowes are usually great sources for cedar planks. Redwood is even longer lasting than cedar, but I found cedar to be the less expensive of the two. I agree that you will have a sturdier, longer lasting box if you use the 2 inch thick (actual size 1 3/4). You will need 16 linear feet for each box. Depending on your mode of transportation, and possible trailering capabilities, you can buy 8ft, 12ft or even 16 ft lengths. I found it was less expensive to buy 8 foot lengths and many places will even cut the lumber into 4 ft lengths for you.

Have you had a chance to source your vermiculite and compost yet? Check our VERMICULITE data base if you are still looking. To find sources click the US D.B. button, to add new sources, click the US FORMS button. All information has been provided by our members, and some information may no longer be up to date, so call the merchant to confirm availability and current prices and save yourself the wear and tear on your vehicle.

Please keep us updated on your progress.
