Help! I've had my garden about two weeks. First the strawberries that were just getting ripe enough have been eaten, I assume by birds. NOW I have had a mint plant and a whole tomato plant eaten down to the roots. It was even pulled from the pot with only a square hole left! What do I do, make cages to go around my beds? Do the owl statues work that I see different places for the birds? This is my first garden even and it's getting maddening! Mad

Red marbles and rocks are supposed to help in the strawberry bed too, I have not tried it yet, but hope to this year.

Great tips on CD's Jay Bird, I'll have to try that one.

My experience has been that birds, rabbits, etc, get used to anything you try eventually. If I were you, I would try to install some netting either around or over or both in the garden.

I kept my spring hoops in place permanently so I can add netting for this reason. However, mine is extra special dog netting. It's sold as bird netting, but mine is for my dog....lol.

For years, I had success with rebar around the perimeter and chicken wire woven over the poles to make a cheap fence. But, once I got my dog, she just jumped over the fence. So, I needed a top.

Same suggestions as others for the pests, but a quick note about the mint. It is VERY invasive and I would strongly recommend against planting it in your SFG unless you want that entire block to be mint. I keep my mints in pots only and have to cut out at least 1 large wedge every year, then refill that space with soil mix, to give it space to grow into and renew itself. It would otherwise fill the pot completely with roots in just 1 year and choke itself to death. It would likely be even happier if I replanted just that wedge with fresh potting soil in the pot each year, but that would be more work. Smile

I have a rather large wild rabbit that is terrorizing my SFG. It began scouting things out in the fall but steered clear of the garden of which was my first season. Perhaps it was simply wary. Now its plucked up the courage to eat this spring. Lettuce and spinach the victims. So I went for my own hair/urine as a free repellent. I've read it works for some and some it does not. It worked for a few weeks. That perhaps spooked it but now the rabbit is over that and back to munching on my beautiful lettuce.

Some repellents I've found online that appear to do the job contain; amongst others,

garlic, cheyenne pepper, putrescent egg solids, bloodmeal.

A chicken wire fence is probably the best option but wanted to try these first.

Does anyone have any experience with repellents?

Critter Ridder, which is essentially pepper spray is quite effective. You do have to reapply following rain.

Andrea on this forum recomended the ScareCrow® motion-activated sprinkler. Here is the info on it but it is available on Amazon for about half the listed price:
http://www.contech-inc.com/products/scarecrow/

I'm tempted to try it if the rabbits or ground squirrels or my dogs breach my fence.

At one time last year, we saw 8 rabbits hopping around AT ONE TIME. They ate all my broccoli transplants.

I had to get a fence. I went with a cheap plastic 24" fence that I put up in an hour. It's enough for the rabbits, but I can still just step over it.

Only works if you have a cat, but used cat litter worked wonderfully for me last year - if you use one that is a natural product and won't add unwanted chemicals & stuff to your yard. We use corn litter, so as long as we have scooped the poop out, it is a perfect rabbit deterrent. Make a trail of the used litter all the way around your box and the rabbits assume that a predator has staked out the territory. I was afraid that my garden would end up smelling like cat pee, but I couldn't smell a thing. The rabbit sure did, tho'! Never had another problem with Thumper! Wish I had found out about it 5 tomato plants, 1 plum tree, and 2 rows of spinach earlier.....

No cat I'm afraid and although I probably would be fine, FarmerVal,
with the odd "bunny burger" now and again, I don't think I have the
heart to end poor Thumper's life just yet. We'll see how long my patience
lasts though. Never say never.. right?

I whipped up some "Rabit Pruf" once to protect some pansies...

Let's see if I remember the recipe: 5 habeneros - mulched in a blender with enough water to get them chopped up. Drained that mess though a coffee filter into a bowl to get the chunky stuff out - added 1/4 cup of oil, 5 drops of dish soap and a dash of elmer's glue. Diluted to make a quart. I put it in a spray bottle an sprayed every few days. Poof - No more rabbit problems with my flowers..

IMPT NOTE - USE GLOVES WITH THE HABENEROS!!

Rabbits nailed the tips of my pepper plants overnight...I wonder why they only eat the tips of pepper plants when there are other green around? Something also ripped out my zinnia seedlings...not eaten as I found them uprooted and laying on the ground. I just prucahsed some plastic and wire fencing to protect individual squares...it may be futile as heavy rain and hail is expected today.
