If you haven't been officially welcomed to the forum, Esther, I would like to extend a warm one. It's great to see you here.

Alaska is such a big state, I have no idea where Sterling is. If you don't mind cluing me in, I would love it. I can't even find a frost date for you...the closest I get is in Washington State somewhere. Gee, that's just down the road, right? LOL.

I hope your snow melts with your increasing daylength and you get in the soil soon. Keep us posted.

Very Happy @BackyardBirdGardner: Thanks for welcoming me, Sterling is about 129 miles from Anchorage, on the Kenai Peninsula. Snow most likely wont leave till May?????
Very Happy @Glendale-gardener: Yep spring fever is running hi and hot but guess it has to wait till snow is gone. Sure will be glad when we get our home built then I can start my seeds sooner in our solarium Laughing

A friend of mine lives in Soldotna - how far is that from you?

Hey there Alaska! (The road way is a water passage BYBG). I was just thinking the other day that we needed a group from Alaska on the board. Hey there!

Thanks for sharing. Aleutians I get. Down the funky border with Canada to Juneau I get, too. Kenai I've heard of, but didn't think was much of a peninsula or chain. Just thought it was loosely defined as an area south of Anchorage....or better yet, Anchorage was north of the Kenai. But, after a brief stint on Google Earth, I can see it all better now. Thanks for education me.

I am shocked that you will still see snow until May! I thought your climate was mild enough, like the PNW, that you would be off and running sooner?

Any details I can get would be delicious. I like geography a bunch, and don't know much about Alaska...other than I really, really want to visit someday.

Post  Old Hippie 3/21/2011, 12:48 pm

Hi Esther. The Kenai Penn. is one of my favourite places on earth. We lived in Whitehorse, Yukon for years and years and spent a lot of our vacations in different parts of Alaska. I hear you on that snow until May. We would usually go camping on the May long weekend but there was always ice out in the middle of the lakes although enough open water at the edge for the kids to fall in. LOL! Now we are down in central British Columbia and only have snow until the middle of April. That extra month makes a huge difference but I want a greenhouse AND a solarium.

Nice to see you on here. Kind of makes me a bit homesick for the Yukon and our trips to Alaska.

Hello again sorry I don't get on much but when start planting hope to be on more.

@beuna : How was the sfg in Anchorage that weather is different than here on the Peninsula.

@Old Hippie: Yep just that extra mo. makes a big difference this is going to be fun got a lot done last yr with the fence and some 4x4's and such. This year we are going to finish up fixing and then it's garden time ya!

@BackyardBirdGardner: I'm going to try and do some picks hopefully it's not hard. It"s beautiful up here.

@Lavender Debs: Hope to get on at least once a week not sure with my job and all glad I found this gardening is my favorite.

@Goosegirl : Soldotna is about 10 miles from Sterling but I live almost right between them the line for Soldotna is in the middle of our side road.
