Re: Growing Mushrooms in the garden, on purpose!
I am way too ignorant and scared to to grow my own shrooms. It is very humid here and they pop up in the yard alots. A few years ago a guy near here had ordered some logs set them up kept them damp and grew shrooms. He picked what grew brought them in sauteed them in butter and Cajun seasoning and sat to a polate full all excited it almost killed him thankfully he realized he was feeling wrong called the EMTs and was able to provide the pan when they arrived. A week in the hospital and he made it. Seems some similar looking yard shrooms had just started growing among the ones sposed to be there. I for one will not do it.
What I do as far as shrooms go is on foggy mornings go hunting for a particular kind. years later i learned they are actually oyster mushrooms. My family has been picking them for at least 4 generations that I am aware of. They grow on willow trees and there are only 2 mushrooms that will grow on willow trees the other is bright orange. I learned to pick them from my grandfather. I aint ever looked it up and I am sure some of you garden experts may know more about them but they are easy to recognize and great stripped, breaded and deep fried.

I think oyster mushrooms are the ones most commonly sold in mushroom growing kits -- maybe because, as you say, there will be no confusing them with others.
Wish I could pick mushrooms wild, but they come and go so quickly here, and there are so many deadly lookalikes. I thought morelles were perfectly safe, but then found out that there is a dangerous false morelle ... *sigh*

Re: Growing Mushrooms in the garden, on purpose!
There is a name for the oyster mushrooms in Cajun french but years later I found out it just means mushroom I dont know how to write it but it is like chau'pion I will jump in my jeep and go looking for them on the second dreary foggy morning. Quite often I get beat out by some early bird old timers with the same plan. I aint ever brought along my camera for some reason but will try to remember in the future. I pick them off of willow trees and will not pick them if I cant be sure its a willow. Its the way I was taught.
Re: Growing Mushrooms in the garden, on purpose!
I have a warning for y'all.... if you add seaweed to your garden they bring squid seeds with them. Seriously... I have "proof!"
Aren't those the weirdest mushrooms? They just popped up this morning in my deep wood chip mulch bed.
Then there are these in another bed:
Any ideas what they are?!

Those squid ones are weird.
So are the other ones in the bottom picture. I get those all over my compost pile. I've never seen them with a normal covered top on them yet.

Has anyone grown a tray of mushrooms from a grocery store mushroom?
Re: Growing Mushrooms in the garden, on purpose!
my understanding is that mycelium doesn't work that way. What we call mushrooms are the fruiting body of the organism. That is why the wood/substrate must be inoculated with spawn for homegrown mushrooms of known species (non-toxic).sanderson wrote:Has anyone grown a tray of mushrooms from a grocery store mushroom?

mushrooms and sfg
I am new to this forum, but have been container gardening for years and finally have a yard and I have 1 question. Is there a procedure to intentionally grow mushrooms in an SFG? I would like to grow portobellos and white button mushrooms. Even these basic and common fungi seem to be some of the most expensive items in the produce section.

I , too, would like to grow mushrooms. I do not know if anyone has using SFG. I am going to have a look in the SEARCH box located at the top left hand side of this page.
ETA Yes, there is a page of mushroom topics, the third one down,

Bump! Sounds a little scary to me. We have wild mushrooms in the woods around here around early May or late April. They are called morels and are easy to identify but hard to see sometimes! Delicious sautéed in butter

Hi IJM dfw. Welcome to our group from Atlanta, GA! We're glad you've joined us.
Can you tell us a little more about your garden & plans? Are you doing strictly SFG or incorporating other things?
Do you have a copy of the All New SFG, 2nd Edition book?

about my garden
Thanks for the welcome, I am thrilled to actually have a yard now - I just sold my condominium and bought my house. Having just finished the inside it is time to tackle the outside. so this year I will be transplanting my herbs and growing familiar things like corn, onions, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, beets, peas... things I grew in my fenced "area" however I like to saute' mushrooms with zucchini and sesame seeds, and since mushrooms are rather costly to purchase, I thought I could grow some. I am using the SFG guides as to design and structure but I am also applying other techniques as well like companion planting and tower gardening.
my towers are made of wood, and about 5', you have probably seen instructions to build them, they are rather easy to build, but I put casters on it and added a worm farm tube down the center and placed copper mesh over the bottom board so I could place gravel in the bottom. the tower is great for leafy things and did well with carrots and root veggies.

Cultivating plants and growing fungi are two very different processes.IJM dfw wrote:I am new to this forum, but have been container gardening for years and finally have a yard and I have 1 question. Mushrooms are actually the fruiting body of the mycelium which inhabits a substrate, like a log or sometimes the garden.
There's a fella around the corner from me that is a mycologist and sells supplies like inoculation plugs and spawn. He also sells amazing mushrooms year round. Here is a link to his site.

I am irritated that you took it upon yourself to move my inquiry with out asking me. you also seem to be under the impression that I am an idiot. I do understand mushroom growing is different from veggie and fruit growing however mushroom ARE plants, regardless of mythology. I AM a biologist AND neuroscientist with a good background in botany, I was asking for help in incorporating mushrooms in SFG. As mushrooms REQUIRE some light and DO benefit certain other plants both flowering and food producing.
You also seem fine with growing psilocybin, an hallucinogenic substance, because some of the places in these links have information about raising mushrooms for illegal purposes, and I refuse to tolerate being associated with criminals even when a third party forces it.
If this is how people are treated on this forum I will remove it from my life

IJM, It is common practice to merge duplicate topics. The Search box is a handy tool for browsing an enormous base of topics members have posted. Many are often just duplicates from previous discussions and merging similar discussions helps corral a wealth of information that members have developed over six (6) years. Just part of Forum housekeeping. Keep in mind that the Administrator, Moderators, and Regional Hosts are all volunteers.
When you joined, you agreed to the following: By clicking on " I agree to these terms " below:

There are over 28,000 members and many daily Visitors. I believe this is the most friendly gardening Forum you will ever, ever find. Members support and encourage each other, promote Square Foot Gardening and gardening in general, and may even take the extra time to try to find outside links that may help a poster with a question.
I might add, that in the Terms of Service (TOS) it is stated that "This is a family friendly forum. Always has been, always will be. Please post accordingly." We would NEVER promote illicit products.

IJM, I would like to add in CampRN's defense that we knew nothing about you except that you're interested in incorporating mushrooms into SFG and you've been doing container gardening. I don't see how that CampRN's answer translates into treating you like an idiot.
The great majority of folks who join us here are beginners to gardening in general or have no knowledge of the subject they are asking questions about. So we operate on the assumption that there is no knowledge about that particular subject.
Like Sanderson says, we're about the friendliest group around. We all want everyone else to succeed!

Hi, IJM dfw, and Welcome from Ohio! It sounds like you are on an exciting brink finally having some space to do more than container gardening! Why don't you share some facts about yourself, and your plans in your new digs? Also, we love pictures, and hope you will post often if you find our group a helpful source, I know I have!
As far as organizing the threads, the administrators do this to keep the site searchable by keywords. In fact, I was the one who "bumped" the thread that camp moved your question to, because when I searched our site for mushrooms, this thread seemed to suit your inquiry to a "tee". There is no malice in anyone's intent here. Further, any links provided are for illustrative purposes only, no endorsements are made as to the content of the website's legitimacy or purposes, that is up to the individual viewer!
Hope this helps you understand where we are coming from, and maybe we will hear about your mushroom adventures!
