Absolutely! We found an old, sturdy, wooden lawn chair, in the debris on the other parcel, that I definitely want to clean up, paint, and put on this path somewhere. We also have the framework for a heavy-duty park bench. We just have to add the wood slats to that one.

I think I'll start a new thread for this project, and another journal for it, too. Oooo, I'll have to get the family together to pick a name for it, and make some neat signs. Painting rocks is one of my hobbies. That opens another whole set of opportunities. happy turtle

Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Empty Gulf Fritillaries Caterpillars

Post  countrynaturals 9/20/2019, 11:56 pm

EMERGERNCY! EMERGENCY! An early watering disaster stunted our passion vine. It came back beautifully, but then we had a baby boom of caterpillars.

Here's what the plant looked like, today:
Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Passio10

If the season was over, it would have been okay, but we still have hundreds of starving caterpillars and butterflies still laying eggs. affraid

Katie volunteered to drive over to the local college, where we knew there was passionvine, and talked them out of a trunk full of cuttings.
Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Trunkf10

After stuffing water jugs with these cuttings, we started rescue operations. These little guys were chewing on sticks and wandering around on the ground. We rescued at least 100.

So sorry, CN.  Could you have taken some of your caterpillars to their vine to help spread the load?

I hope your caterpillars survive.

It's actually illegal to transport critters without a permit. This way is easier, anyway. Luckily, they aren't having this problem at the college and have way more passionvine than they need, and the college is close by, so Katie will be making another trip, soon. We don't have passionvine at our new place, so this time, we'll do a better job of collecting cuttings and processing them properly, instead of just jamming them into jars of water -- leaves and all.

Here are a few of the little darlings at breakfast.

My first pepper of 2019. The deer tried to kill them, but we rescued them and moved them into the Salad Bar, where they recovered and are now starting to produce. This one was a surprise, hiding under a leaf. I discovered it while looking for a new avatar.

Blackeyed Limas. I made the mistake of planting them in with kale and cukes, but they decided to take over the world. Now they're 10' up an oak tree, but very happy.

I'm in love with Lima Beans! I love you Mine are actually 15' to 20' up that tree. I pulled a nice harvest of dried and fresh and there are still plenty more to get. I just realized I never posted my 2017 BTE bush limas, so here they are on Sep. 2, 2017, just starting to blossom.
Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Btelim10
This year's variety is "Lima Bean -- Alabama Blackeye." When looking for the packet, I found 2 other varieties -- bush and baby, so next year, I will find room for 3 beds of these puppies. alrighta

I can't find any record of my harvest for 2017, but I don't think I got as much from that 12'? BTE row as I've already gotten from the blackeyes in the Salad Bar, with plenty more to come.

Here's today's harvest:
Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Limas10

Limas are Bob's favorite veggie -- fresh, dried, Butter beans, baby limas -- he loves them all and turns them into delicious soup, side dishes, and one-dish meals. I'm on Cloud 9 this morning. I feel like a little kid, bringing a home-made present to "Daddy."

New goal: Radishes 12 months a year -- bulbs when they feel like it -- seed pods the rest of the time.

Found a baby pumpkin this morning. YEE-HAH!

Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Pumpki15
My biggest challenge for next year is what to do with the vine crops. There's no more room in the Salad Bar, and the deer got every single one I planted anywhere else this year. Butterfly Junction - Page 33 671790

I just went back over 2016 and this is about the only thing that's still true. dangit

2017 was still my most productive year, because the deer hadn't discovered my garden, yet, so I got zukes, pattypans, tromboncino, melons, etc., in addition to my regular toms, cukes, beans, and kale. Next year I must find a way to bring in the vine crops. thinking

Post  countrynaturals 10/24/2019, 1:06 pm

But wait -- there's more! Rolling Eyes

I've been chasing the elusive brandywine for 3 years. This is the closest I've ever come -- and the best part is that it's growing inside, in front of the slider to the bedroom balcony. I can't grow here in the summer -- the sun is too high and stays above the roof line -- but this time of year, we get all the sun we need to grow whatever I want. YEE-HAH! happy turtle

Butterfly Junction - Page 33 Brandy13

Note: I thought this was so beautiful I can't wait to paint it on a rock. I showed it to Hubby, expecting him to ooh and aah over it, but he said it's the ugliest thing he's ever seen!. WHAT!? I've been fighting to grow brandywines just for him. Now I think if I ever do get one, instead of feeding it to him, I'll just throw it at him! get that pesky wabbi get that pesky wabbi get that pesky wabbi

Just designed our deer-proof garden for next year! YEE-HAH! happy turtle

I planted artichoke seeds to replace the plants that died while we were evacuated last summer, but didn't have any place to plant them. Katie got the bright idea to line up some of those big boxes that we bought for a project at the new place that never happened. We put them next to the asparagus bed and they look great. Then we realized that we could line up 2 more rows toward the front of the property, then fence it all in, up to the front chain link fence, and have an easy deer-proof, raised bed garden for next year. That will give us an additional 48 sq ft, added to the 16' of new boxes I added to the Salad Bar. That should give us all the space we need to feed our extended family. I'll post pics as soon as we get the other boxes moved in, which should be soon, so I can get them filled up with wood chips, compost, and freshly raked leaves. alrighta

Suz, if you're along the fenceline, make sure you have some plastic or something down to prevent weeds/grass from growing between the fence & box.

I made that mistake & it's been miserable!
