White Butterfly
I have some of the little white butterflies that I think some call cabbage moth. I keep looking at my kale for some damage or worms but I haven't found anything. What should I be looking for?

Re: White Butterfly
Small green worms that look like inch-worms munching away making holes. Light-colored small eggs on the underside of the leaves.
I have a whole flock of cabbage moths this am. At least five floating around the yard & garden! And I found some eggs.

Thanks, that's a big help.

Re: White Butterfly
If you can get close to the moths, you'll see 2-3 small spots on the inside of their wings. They're very flighty & will take off if you get anywhere close to them.
And the worms are the same color as the cabbage, at least for me...

Re: White Butterfly
We bought one of those tennis racket looking bug zappers this past weekend. My 81 yr old mom thinks she's going to run around the yard batting those butterflies.
Can't wait to see that!
Meanwhile, I cover all my susceptible veggies with tulle as soon as I plant them.

CC, Hey, Mom may surprise you! DH thinks someone chasing these is worthy of being filmed and placed on YouTube!
Re: White Butterfly
Look for the eggs every day. It's not always easy to spot them, and in even a single day they can do a ton of damage, so you want to monitor constantly. If at all possible, leave no leaf unturned!

Re: White Butterfly
Isn't there a difference between a moth and a butterfly? Something to do with the wings?
Re: White Butterfly
Not only do (did) I have green worms, I now also have small tomato worms! It must officially be summer. I even found a cabbage worm on a cantaloupe leaf.
Re: White Butterfly
A few differences - If memory still serves, a butterfly has 4 wings, smooth antennae & body (I think) and a moth has 2 wings, hairy antennae & body.Kelejan wrote:Isn't there a difference between a moth and a butterfly? Something to do with the wings?

Re: White Butterfly
I got two of them this morning, one I hit with the water hoes and grabbed it and the other was cornered in the greenhouse. Two less. Butterflies fly during the day and moths fly at night.

Re: White Butterfly
Ummmm... Now I'm really confused....
I am certain that the white butterflies I've been chasing are cabbage moths. At least, according to all the pics I've found of them. But they're flying all over - during the day!

blue-green caterpillar = white butterfly
Apparently there is a smaller evening white moth.

Re: White Butterfly
Butterflies land with their wings upright and moths land with their wings flat like a blanket. If the white fliers land with their wings up it is a cabbage butterfly. If there is a cabbage moth I have not seen one but then I miss most everything anyway.

Fun
Hi Marie,AtlantaMarie wrote:Hmmmm.... Maybe I could get them then! Worth thinking about!!!!
This is where I got mine:
http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=bug+zapper
It doesn't always work very well for me, but I'm not fast enough either. I got mine on sale, but sometimes Harbor Freight will have them for free as part of a promotion.

Windmere, I left work right after reading where you got your bug zapper and went immediately to Harbor Freight and bought one. Can't wait to get home and try it. I haven't played "tennis" in years but I bet it will all come back to me.

Re: White Butterfly
Sounds like a way to feel less helpless around those fiendish bugs, anyway. Let us know if it works for you! So many times I've been JUST a little too slow or far away to catch a bug ...

Re: White Butterfly
I went home about 11:00 and went out to the garden to try the bug zapper out. Lots of white butterflies flitting around. Lets just say I am glad no one was around to watch or take pictures!! It is harder than I thought but after a while I figured out that if you wait until they flit by you it is a little easier and I managed to zap two and hit one (forgot to push the on button).

Re: White Butterfly
Harbor Freight: only $3.99? Is that correct? That's a steal if it works! (when you remember to push the button )

Re: White Butterfly
I've seen white cabbage moths flying around my garden. I can't find any worms - only evidence as my arugula and kale have little holes and leaf bites. I sprayed some insecticidal solution this morning after I witnessed her landing on my greens. Couldn't catch her. Going out to buy some netting. UGH.

I've been out in the middle of the night and see lots of these flying around, I don't think they even sleep.

Re: White Butterfly
Cabbage Butterflies by day, Cabbage moths by night.
DH just got home with this! Around $15 at Orchard Supply, which is very close to us. Harbor Freight's July 4th sale or even full price right now would mean a gallon of gas, so the convenience was worth it.
So far, plants 2 - butterflies 0. DH rolling on the grass laughing - priceless.
