Re: Butterfly Junction
Yup, if I have to take a season off, summer is the one to give up. All I do is water and wait all the way through July and August.Turan wrote:From what I can see you have lots of garden already growing. A friend of mine in Arizona takes summers off from hte garden, just too hot, and is time to for her to travel.
I hope your real estate dealings work out well.
Enjoy that swimming pool
Thanks for the well-wishes on the real estate deals. We aren't set to close until the middle of June and all kinds of stuff could go wrong between now and then.
The pool is heavenly -- still a little cold, however.
Re: Butterfly Junction
A swimming pool!! Totally jealous. I keep looking at my tiny yard wondering if I could fit in a kiddie pool.
Re: Butterfly Junction
I'll bet you could find a spot for one of those small hot tubs. I've seen some really neat ones that could nestle in with the plants and be really refreshing on a hot day.sanderson wrote:A swimming pool!! Totally jealous. I keep looking at my tiny yard wondering if I could fit in a kiddie pool.
Re: Butterfly Junction
Yesterday we got a call from our grandson-in-law. He wanted to get rid of a bunch of large landscape rocks and a huge load of topsoil and dead grass from their front yard. He was going to pay to dump it. WHAT?! Anyway, we had him bring it to the new place and dump it in front, where I'm going to mound it into a gentle curve and turn it into a pollinator garden. He was afraid he was imposing on us. I'm looking at about $800 worth of beautiful dirt WITH NO ROCKS! I've already named the finished garden "Allan's Knoll." I can't wait to get it finished, but I'm already exhausted from the other projects involved in this deal, so I may still be looking at that pile of dirt in October.
Re: Butterfly Junction
Wow.. Did you smack your son in law over the head.. likes Gibbs did to Tony in N.C.I.S?
For curiosity sake.. how much was he looking at paying the person to haul it away and "dispose" of it?
I cant wait to see how your creativity flows with Allan's Knoll.

Re: Butterfly Junction
He's in the automotive biz, and has friends with heavy equipment. He had an "excavator" truck with a hydraulic dump thingy. I think he also borrowed a tractor to dig it up with. The only cost would have been about $30 to dump it. For me, it's pure gold. He had already brought over a regular pickup load and dumped that at the old house, so I have plenty of materials if I ever get a chance to garden again.Greenbeard wrote:Wow.. OMIGOSH!!!!!
The new house has a partial walk-out basement that the previous owners forgot to clean out. Most of it went into the dumpster, but at the very back, we found A COMPLETE GROW LIGHT SETUP! YEE HAH! I AM ALL SET FOR WINTER GROWING!

Re: Butterfly Junction
That is a beauty of a find! Looks like you just may be able to start some seeds this season
maybe just some cuttings from stuff in the yards that you or the butterfly's like.

Re: Butterfly Junction
Well, I was wrong about the electricity. Hubby had an extension cord down there for lights, but the breaker box is in there, so it shouldn't be hard to get some outlets installed. That's several months down the road, so it's not on my 10-mile-long to-do list for today.sanderson wrote:countrynaturals wrote:Even more kewl, there's electricity, and I think there's water, and the cement floor drains, so I could have the whole thing going on!CapeCoddess wrote:OMG!!! Carrot Blossom
Here's what you get when you let your carrots grow all winter and spring. These babies are almost 3' tall and beautiful, but no longer fit to eat.

I wouldn't have time to fool with them this year, anyway, but thanks for the info.Turan wrote:They readily cross pollinate and the cross is bitter.sanderson wrote:Turan, good point if they can cross-pollinate.
Hen & Chicks
I guess this really is "the year of the flower" for me. I've never seen hen & chicks bloom before, but I have 2 of them getting ready to blossom. (The other one isn't in the pic.)
Re: Butterfly Junction
WE BOUGHT A TREEHOUSE! Escrow finally closed on this deal that we've been working on for most of this year. I've been afraid to talk about it, cuz there was so much that could have gone wrong, but now there's nothing left except to record the deed, so I think it's safe to share.
Here's why I've named it "The Treehouse." This is the view from the balcony, right outside our kitchen door (about 10' above ground level). This fall, I hope to start an herb garden in containers, here. There are no stairs, so it will be a cat-free zone, too. That means I can hang my hummingbird feeders out there. More pics, tomorrow, but I had share something today or explode!

Re: Butterfly Junction
We have decided to move into this one and let our kids take over the one we're living in, now. It means I'll have to hike the length of a football field to get to the Salad Bar and BTE beds, but maybe I'll get a little electric scooter to make it easier.
I know the last pic probably didn't make any sense, so here are some more to put it all in perspective.
This shot is from the kitchen, looking out toward the balcony, which is straight out the back of the house. The pool area is off to the right.
This shot is from below, looking back up at the kitchen. This whole house owes its personality to that big old oak tree.
Finally, here is my view from the kitchen sink (a quarter turn to the left of door). The house is all on one level, but the property drops down in the back, so the back half of the house really is up in the treetops.
