Asparagus question
I don't grow asparagus but I have several wild plants around my property. I also have a secret map of fifteen or twenty locations around the neighborhood where I have spotted plants. I am starting to see new shoots coming up so the time to pick is coming up. I usually pick around dinner time and drive my no license bulldog which is very quiet. My question is the best way to cut the shoots. I have heard to cut them below the surface and others cut them at ground level. Does it make a difference? I surely do not want to kill any of (my) plants.

Re: Asparagus question
This will be my first year cutting asparagus - I'm so excited!
I read in the Victory Garden book to cut below the surface and unless someone tells us that the latest is not to do that that's what I'll do.
I'll be shoving the shears into the dirt only up to where the mechanism doesn't get sand into it and cutting there. Not that deep as the blades are only about 1.5 inches long, so I'll go about 1/2 inch below the surface.

Re: Asparagus question
At ground level or just point ya pocket knife down a little is fine. We learned this the hard way however cause leaving stumps can cause the roots to rot down here in the soggy south, Once ya pick a bunch lay them in a shallow pan and park it on your bbq pit with some butter and spices to taste. They are so good the doggys will beg ya for them.
